If all 6 billion of us had an IQ of 200 that would fall under the category of an extendable method achievable through improved reproduction - I'm not arguing reproduction is the method we should use - since the net intelligence of our collective mind would dramatically improve. I don't think you guys realize properly that there ALREADY exists a high level intelligence, it is our collective one, where every single one of us plays a role similar to a neuron.

It's easy to see if you realize that you yourself are basically the collective mind of all your billions of neurons. The next logical step is for our collective mind to develop self-awareness but that can only happen through us developing it at the same time (expanding our self perception to encompass more than just our current body) since our consciousness is a hologram of the collective consciousness (I wonder if this is related to Stuart Hammeroff's gamma quantum consciousness theory).

How all these clever guys keep ignoring this simple observation is beyond me. Oh, and by the way, read I am You by Daniel Kolak and try getting him to the SS 2010. If we play our cards correctly we could have the Techno-Spiritual Singularity started in 2012, and that would be very romantic, imho :P

    Here's another thought:

If we assume that truth, goodness and beauty are the three ultimate qualities of God/existence then perhaps it is like this:

    1. The Technological Singularity is the aspect of truth, it deals with the underlying technical and logical aspects.

    2. The Consciousness Singularity is the aspect of goodness. it is the realization that we are all the same one consciousness/personal identity/God and lays down the foundation for Global Ethics (read Kolak's I Am You).

    3. The Spiritual Singularity is the aspect of beauty. It is the religious/New Age/romantic approach. It is the one that will make you cry from joy when it all happens.

So there you go, God is coming and it is you.

Regardless of whether or not we can transfer consciousness to a non-biological system, there's a good argument for being capable of creating machines that can out-think us which in turn might devise technology that humans don't fully understand. I do believe the singularity is near. But by that time (if all goes well) technology will seem to most people to be magical beyond belief already with just the innovations that we humans are capable of.

I was not aware that an open ended simulation is an unsolved problem, having the Critterding simulator in mind. It seems to cover a lot of a lot of aspects of what Chalmers is talking about, although it might be considered "leaky" ;)
