A couple points I might add.
First is that robotic traffic technologies are being used today in warehouses with pallet movers and storage containers, but a centralized system works out all the details in most cases. I think people would be open to that with cars if it were a citywide, all-inclusive system.
Second, I think the transition will happen a little at a time, which he hinted at, but I think it's the way it will happen. First we had GPS for navigation, now we have some collision detection/course correction features. Soon we'll have sign reading and rule following features. Eventually we will let go of the wheel.
Last point, early adopters won't just be commuting, they will be competing. And not just for Darpa and X-Prize money but for sport and spectator dollars. There will be large prize races that will draw in corporate sponsorship and spur innovation. (Same this will happen with robotics - people will eat up robo-fighting.)
Personally, I can't wait to tour the country in Robo RV!
Robotic transport sounds wonderful. To me it means being on time, unlike many public transport in South Africa, where the bus is not on time, or two hours later or never comes or worst, the bus driver see you, you flag the bus to stop, but the bus driver decided just to pass you by, maybe he is in a hurry to get off work!
