Better than sleeping pills. Shot on a Canon EOS 7D DSLR on the bleak moors of County Durham.

Camera was set flat, sharpening, contrast and sat all down, HTP off and then a hefty grade applied in FCP.

Lenses:

Canon 10-22mm F/3.5-4.5
Canon 50mm F/1.8
Olympus Zuiko 24mm F/2.8
Olympus Zuiko 135mm F/2.8

Music: Three Sisters by Hammock

    Beautiful!
  • iamkalaniprince plus 2 years ago
I agree, very beautiful footage. Reminded me of Gus Van Sants "Gerry".. I have an Olympus Zuiko 50mm and am just stoked on it's image quality etc... In some cases I prefer these older and less contrasty lenses as they let you eeek out as much dynamic range as humanly possible.. Have you found the 24mm to be the same ?
I want to see more !!!

    Love and Aloha, iamKP-

Great atmosphere you've captured Euan. Love the colours. Is the footage of the windmills slowed down? Or were they that slow?
  • Euan Preston plus 2 years ago
Thanks! They're not slowed at all - they're enormous turbines, so look deceptively slow.

Awesome! makes me wanna learn how to create videos like this!

How to use Zuiko lenses on the Canon camera. Are the lenses four thirds and then adapted to Canon mount?
  • Euan Preston plus 2 years ago
Thanks! They're the older, OM mount Zuiko lenses. I picked up an adapter from eBay for about £20.

Do you ever have any problems with that adapter? Can you link the brand of adapter you bought? Do they have adapters for Nikon lenses too?
  • Euan Preston plus 2 years ago
It was a cheap Chinese import - I couldn't tell you the brand or the seller as I bought it a couple of years ago. However they're abundantly available and yes, you can get Nikon ones too. Check out cinema5d.com as there are a couple of discussions about adapters.

  • Love Story Media plus 2 years ago
I was totally drifting off until that damn car whizzed past.

Nice vid. A bit noisy despite ample light, I've noticed this with the 5D as well. Doesn't matter how fast the lens or how low the ISO is. Some funky processing must be causing that.
  • Euan Preston plus 2 years ago
You'd be surprised; the noisier shots were taken at iso 3200 in very low light - so dark I couldn't see the spirit level on the top of my tripod. What looks like noise in the very detailed daylight shots is actually aliasing and some compression artefacts.
  • Love Story Media plus 2 years ago
I notice the artifacts, but also noise at ISO 160. This is on L lenses with a lot of light, in scenes with little detail. Have you experienced this? It's driving me nuts, as I've seen 5D/7D footage that didn't seem to have ANY noise...
  • Euan Preston plus 2 years ago
I think it depends on the shot; how much detail, contrast, DoF etc. Shots like the thistle in the video above tend to be clean whereas I've noticed a lot more noise in wide shots with deep DoF. It's all about the compression I reckon.

Amazing. I want to be there.

By the way, I'd love to see a couple "before" shots to see how you achieved some of these colors from the raw footage.
  • Euan Preston plus 2 years ago
Thanks! There's very little correction on the sunset shots, just altered the gamma curve to add some punch. The sky really did turn blood red!

The heavier grade is on the daylight shots which had much more curves adjustment and the blacks pushed into blue.

Hi Euan, very nice. I'm just trying to work out where in the County this is. I'm born and bred in Durham but living in North Lancs now. Are you up near Stanhope or Consett way?
Loved the colour grading as well.
  • Euan Preston plus 2 years ago
thanks! Much of this was shot on the road between Stanhope and Barnard Castle. The turbine shots are from the East side of Tow Law. We've only recently moved to CD, having lived in various parts of the country.

That's an amazing piece of art. I'm normally more a fan of photography, but these captures top everything. Thought about having some parts of the video as individual photographs? Would probably not create the same atmosphere but would look stunning anyways.
  • Euan Preston plus 2 years ago
Thanks Christian. I may go shoot some stills up on the moors soon. Extracting stills from 7d video is possible but is very low res compared to 18mp raw images.

That's cool, would be great if you'd let me know about it somehow then, I'm using flickr.com for that purpose (flickr.com/photos/creative-me/).

I just moved back to the homeland recently (Ushaw Moor, i presume close to where this was shot, no?) and was struck by the beauty of the place and wanted to do something like this when we had all those great sunsets over August. I'm glad you beat me to it. perfect pace and music, you really just let the raw beauty of the landscape do the rest. Loved it.

Not that much to tell really. as I said, done in FCP. Most CC done with the 3 way Colour Corrector, blacks crushed into blue and contrast added as I was filming with a very flat profile. Hope that helps!

  • David Belusic 2 years ago
    this is awesome thank you.
stupid question...are these lenses you're using FDs? EOS?
this looks just as good as stuff i've shot on my HMC150 with 35mm adapter.
  • Euan Preston plus 2 years ago
    Thanks David!

The lenses are EOS (EF) and Olympus OM Zuiko (with adapter).

Used in the right conditions, the 7d can rival an HD camera with adapter. It is limited to those conditions however, and it'll be some time yet before I part with my HVX200 and Letus.
  • Euan Preston plus 2 years ago
The HVX200 is a bit dated now, but it's still a better video camera than the 7d. Why? Because it was designed as a video camera and not a stills camera.

The 7d's shortcomings are many - that's not to say it doesn't have it's place, but it has none of the technical and ergonomic conveniences of shooting with a proper video camera.

In video mode, the 7d has serious issues caused by binning and inadequate compression - it can't cope with high detail, high contrast images. It suffers very noticeable rolling shutter 'jello' effects precluding any fast pan / cross fov motion.

The ergonomic limits are even more important; first it *must* be mounted, be that on a tripod or a shoulder mount like the Zacuto Tactical shooter. Shooting without a mount results in an unwatchable wobbly image. Also, SLR lenses are not designed like video lenses with their big, comfortable focus/aperture rings and breathless focus. The 7d has unusably bad audio, both in terms of software (AGC) and inputs (only a minijack input) requiring external audio recording equipment. Video monitoring is again difficult without third party eyepieces / HD field monitors. Recording to FAT formatted CF cards forces a clip record time limit of around 12 mins.

It's important to bare in mind that all of the above limitations can be overcome, the question is will doing so undermine the benefits of using the 7d? If so, look to another camera. I love my 7d, it's great to use and can produce some superb images, but I'll always keep a dedicated video camera that I can take onto any job knowing it'll do what I need it to.

Try a more of a tranquil music selection. Show it to friends in three or four age groups and let them select which they like better. When I first read, that the audio is more important than the video (pictures) in a video production, I objected. But as I study this artistic medium, I'm coming closer to agreeing to that statement. Thanks for the excellent choice of pictures!

Ive gotta noobish question which you may could answer:
    Ive got a Olympus 17.5-45 mm 3.5-5.6 Lense on a Olympus E-500..

is there a possible way to use this lense for the Canon 7D? Is it worth to use it? its just because of my low student budget :(
    Thanks for answers!

Beautiful shots here! Everything was amazing! I was wondering, what were the settings for the picture style you used? I've got a 7D and the image quality is aweful...I must shoot at sharpness 1 or 0 and contrast at -3 to get something not that bad...Even the T2i got a better image quality for exactly the same settings...I got a Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM and a Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM and even with these lenses, the quality is really bad...Thanks and congrats for you video! Nice work!

    Hi Euan,
Im really interested in the Olympus Zuiko lenses, particularly the 24mm f/2.8. When i got my 7D i went for the Canon 50mm 1.4 USM as my main shooter, but due to tightness of the crop sensor, I've been looking for new, wider primes. What's your experience with the Zuiko's and could you possibly point out some shots that were taken with the 24mm in the video?
