You did an absolutely wonderful job of capturing our journey that day. Marathon Swimming is a mentoring sport and at every level a team effort. You captured the essence of what goes into making a single day happen and how generously people contribute to one another. I loved the cinematography, editing and the score.... Thank you for creating this beautiful film.

Great film, Stephen! You really captured it all: the personal commitment, the support of family and friends, the technical aspects, and the experience.

As a filmmaker, UCSB grad and masters swimmer, I must be the perfect target audience for The Crossing! I found it to be really inspiring, and forwarded the link to my masters swimming friends.

Now, the technical questions... what lenses and equipment did you use? Were you filling your cards and wrangling them to a laptop on the boat?

Strangely, I liked the rough shots as much as the pretty ones. There was one low light shot that had more noise than signal. It really gave a feel for how dark it was. And you must have really been fighting the long lens with the boat riding the waves when Marc walked up on the sand. It really gave a feel for the challenges of being in the water.

Anyway, congratulations to you on a great film. And congratulations to Marc on an amazing swim.

    Thank you Jon,
I really appreciate your comments, you are a super talented filmmaker and I appreciate the kind words! About the equipment: I used a single Canon XH-A1 which is HDV, so no card dumping. I think I shot 12 hours of footage total, only 3 hours on the boat! I used the stock lens on the cam, which is an AMAZING 35mm-650mm f/1.6-f/3.5 lens! For sound on the boat I used the stereo mic on the camera (something I wouldn't do again!) and for the interviews I used an Audio-Technica 897 shotgun. The underwater shots were done by Sickie and the timelapse was done with my dad's Canon 1Ds Mark III. About the super grainy/noisy shot at night: that shot was TOTALLY black, so I brought up the highlights and mids to an unreasonable degree and then tinted it green to make it look faux-IR!! Edit with FCP, grade with FCP and Magic Bullet Looks. Any other questions?
