    Nice work & video!
Can you elaborate a bit more on the technical side? Type of lenses, camera frame rate, etc?
  •
  • Thanks Jan. The lenses used were all L series except the 50mm f/1.4. The rest were the 17 - 35 f/2.8, 24 - 105 f/4 and 70 - 200 f/2.8. Camera frame rate was mostly 24p with a few 30p and 60p shots for the slower bits. Edited in Final Cut Pro, colored in Apple Color.

really impressive video and very enjoyable tune :)

just wondering how you manage the different resolutions:
what's the final delivery resolution of this video?

1080p, so you just up-res your 720p slowo footage?
or 720p, so you down-res your 1080p footage?

    thanks!
    great video, again :)
  • We delivered in full res uncompressed 1080p (up-res'd slow-mo) so they could do what they liked with the footage, though down-resing to 720p would probably be ideal.

We were also specifically asked to deliver in NTSC digibeta. It may be that Japan, like here, is still mostly watching SD television broadcasts.
  • Digibeta SD right?
  • Right!

Nice one James. What picture profile/cam settings did you you use?. I'm torn between using a Genesis/Viper-style extreme low contrast gamma setting for post work or trying to do it all in camera. Cheers, Peter
  • Peter, we went with low contrast, low sharpness in-camera (all the way down), then added it back in Color to taste. It helped a lot to prevent clipping/crushing in our higher contrast lighting situations.
  • How do you do that in the camera?
  • The custom picture style settings. Hit the button to the left of the viewfinder, under menu, select one of the user presets (1-3), then hit the "info" button to adjust.

Q: Would any normal person know this was shot on a $1700 camera?

A: Not in a million years.

    Nice work James.
  • That's exactly the goal! Thanks Billy.

    Most impressive.

Lovely job, Troy. I too would like to know what profile settings you have found work best in post. Have you had any problems with moire effects that these cameras suffer from? I've just started shooting with my 7d and can't wait to get some lights out to see how good it can look!
Well done James and the team
  • Different Take, we dropped contrast and sharpness all the way down in-camera. We also transcoded to Prores 422 for editing and color correction. It helped a ton that Troy has a great eye and was exposing every shot well.

We avoided most materials/textures that might cause moire, but didn't have much trouble.

    Thanks for the encouragement!

From Billy: "Would any normal person know this was shot on a $1700 camera?"Not in a million years!"
    No Question!!!
I wathed it in a 32`LCD TV four times and, despite lesser resolution, If I didn`t aware it was shot with 7D, I could swear it was a 35mm negative original.
    Nice video and music.
  • That's really what we all hoped for: to make something that people who aren't "camera buffs" wouldn't even notice was digital.

    And your English is great!

    Sorry: I wasn`t aware.
English is not my original language.

Outstanding work. This is such great proof that 7D CAN DO IT! I can't wait to get mine in December.

What lighting rigs did you have?
  • Two Arri soft bank kits indoors. Bounce boards and silks outdoors.
  • Matt Choules 1 month ago
Very nice variety of lighting. Soft and flattering in places, direct and characterising in other parts.

Set design, make-up and costume are wonderful...

Well done to the locations people for finding perfect places for this video.

This might be my new favourite music video. Stunning.
  • Thanks Matt, that's very flattering.

Extreme props go to Troy Stains, Bob Butler, Harley Pelayo and the rest of the crew. Bob whipped those sets together in about 24 hours.

  • I'm totally sporting one of your tees in the production photos. Haha.

Fantastic. It's the skill of the creative team that makes this camera shine, not the other way around.
  •
  • Wow, thank you for such a compliment Michael.

Very nice people. This just made me feel better about my 7D order.
Now I can't wait to see some camera movement in some videos with the 7D.

what kind of camera support/ follow focus was used?
  • We rented a 15mm rails support and Arri follow focus from PC&E in Atlanta. They helped put one together for us in-house (great people there). Used Redrock gears on the lenses.

wow. great to see some high end stuff being done with this camera. Despite all the bashing going on.
  • Louis Schroder 1 month ago
Camera Bashing will happen with every camera ever released. The secret is to ignore them and go out and make videos/films with it. If the camera works for you, it doesnt matter what other people think about it. This video is a perfect example.

I like the most the natural (nature) feel to the video, goes well with the Music.

Nice work! Did you add in sharpening in post? I find the 7D to be a little soft at 1080p.
  • Jon, we sharpened one shot, just a touch. This was to make the focus 'pop' a little more. Everything else was untouched sharpness-wise. I actually quite liked the way the footage came out with sharpness zeroed in-camera.
  • Jon Carr plus 1 month ago
Cool! Anyway we could get a high res version? I would like to see what it looks at a larger size.

    Nice!

I'm so glad to see some real work being done with this 7D camera. After all, it's just a tool. In the average hand it's a hammer, but in hands like yours, it's true potential as an Artist's Paint Brush can be realized.

Please keep up the great & inspiring work.
    Cheers.

Hey sorry to be repetitive but am I understanding this? Picture style standard with sharpness at 0 contrast at -4 and did you leave saturation and color tone at 0? I too have color and would like to know the best settings. Thanks great looking video!
  • No sweat Taylor. You're close! Picture style neutral. Everything else is correct (saturation and color tone were untouched from their defaults in-camera).

I just did a test shoot with the Marvel low-con settings. I used two Schneider ND's as a Vari-ND. I sure got the low-contrast look for grading but I feel the polas added a pretty yucky colour-cast. James you must have used ND's in the vid?
  • We did indeed Peter. On the 77mm lenses (all of the L glass) we used a Tiffen ND .6, sometimes stacked with a circular polarizer to preserve the sky. We noticed a distinct low contrast look (even moreso) with the 70-200mm at its full focal length, but no real odd color-cast with any of the lenses. What's nice about long lenses is that you get a nice shallowness stopped fairly far down. For the 50mm 1.4 we used a 72mm Promaster ND 8X with a step down ring.

If there was any oddity, Troy did a great job of grading it out in post.
  • Peter Corbett plus 1 month ago
Thanks again James for being so generous with your technique.

Awesome. I really liked your movie. Would like to see how it looked before grading. Arround 3.14 it looks as if it is slightly out of sync. Maybe intended.

Fantastic work James! it is so nice to see DSLR's being put on the map in the commercial video world! I have the 5D2 and I'm loving it! These little Canon's are changing how its' done!
    Bravo!
BTW.. Jason looks like he's having a blast jamming on the Banjo! :)
  •
  • So, like everyone else has said: beautiful lighting, great exposure, nice everything. That said, is this seriously Arrested Development from the early-90s??? (Tennessee, Mr Wendall, etc...??) Wow, I love Speech.... Anyway, so cool to see them recording again!

Smashing result! ....Has the cam ever locked up on writing data to the card on you yet? Sometimes I get a funky error message and the take is most definately NOT "in the can"

Great work! Seems as though you really worked within the cameras technical limitations to get an excellent result - i.e. minimal camera movements. Very nice.

    AMAZING work!!!!
Can't believe this was shot on a 7D!!!!
So inspiring, this has inspired me so much!
I was wondering what lenses were used specifically at:

    0:28 and 0:45

I'm interested in getting a 7D, body only, and I am looking for lenses. I love that image!

    Again, great job!
  • More than likely it was the Canon 17-35mm f/2.8 both times. That was probably our most used lens this shoot.

    Thanks for the kind words!

Thanks for the fast reply! I am thinking of getting this camera to shoot a feature film. Would you recommend it for a tedious project like that? Or is it for shorter films, and music videos?
  • People are using it for such things, and to good effect, but I'd be far less inclined to use it for a feature.

How do you get full uncompressed 1080p? I thought the camera records to H.264? Do you capture to an HD box like the Convergent Design NanoFlash? Can you capture full uncompressed HD with a BlackMagic Capture card from the camera after it's shot? just curious about it since you said you delivered full uncompressed HD.

Awesome video by the way! Love the theme, sets, lighting, energy and just plain joy in this music.
  • Sorry for the confusion John. We didn't capture uncompressed, just delivered the final file without additional compression (Proress 422 with pass through audio). We captured straight to CF cards in h.264 as per usual. No experience with any of those HD boxes as of yet.

    Glad you enjoyed it!
