Sept. 5 is the birthday of experimental composer, musician and artist John Cage. One of the chief influences of Fluxus, Cage is best known for his 1952 composition 4'33" that is performed without deliberate sound. Musicians presenting the piece do nothing for the duration specified by the title. The content of the composition is not silence, but the sounds heard (and often made) by the audience during the time.
At 4:33 p.m on Sept. 5, we joined others around the country in celebrating Cage's birthday as part of Silence 101 organized by Patrick Greene. Members of Big Car Collaborative and others who joined us (some by chance) met at the Brick Head sculpture in Davlan Park at Mass Ave and Alabama St. in Indianapolis. The event lasted 4 minutes and 33 seconds.
