2. Breakdown: Closet Above Bed
This is a short breakdown of my entry to greyscalegorilla animation contest "Spooky Scary".

A technique that is not very well explain in the breakdown, is that you can use the depth pass to control the exposure effect. Use the depth pass as a luma matte and nice things can happen :)

Have a nice day!

Wow, Tor! great Breakdown, buddy! :]
    t'was very interesting to see!
i am wondering about a few things... First-how can you model a symmetrical\precised geometry based on only 1 photo [which is taken from a weird angle?

and Second...didnt u have any problems with the brown handles, while projecting the image? meaning, isnt there a chance they could get out of bounds and all?

    Hi creon & eladbari, Thanks!
Q1: I measured the closet (lenght, height and width), and I sort of knew the camera and lens. But the best tool was photomatch (plugin) to quickly build up the geometry. In Photomatch you can set up perspective lines that will help you to figure out the camera angel and focal lenght ++.

Q2: There is some photoshopping behind the scenes :) The projected picture is made in several layers. The brown handels has their own image projectet on them. And the image is baked after sucessfull projecting. But only the geometry which is animated is baked. Hope this is possible to understand :) Ps. When the texure is baked, then you are quite in control how and were you want the texture to be. So then you can easilymake sure they dont go out of bounds..

Thanks for all the positive feedback, I am honored.
    Best Regards,
    Tor Martin Norvik

Nice attention to detail. Great work getting all your projections nice and tidy.

What were you going after with the "optics compensation" pass?
  •
  • Tor Martin Norvik 21 days ago
Hi Ken, thanks for your feedback. The purpose with the optics compensation is to deform the egdes of the picture, to fake the result that looking through a true camera lens gives you. You can get som nice "bending" in your image, which makes it a little less "CG". Offcourse, if its overdone - then it will work against itself.

  • Great! How long did it take to do the project?
  • Tor Martin Norvik 15 days ago
Hi Franco and thanks! The project took about 6 solid hours to do. Thats the sweet thing about only 5 seconds projects. The theme is premade, so its just to jump in on the techniqual stuff :)
