This started out as a custom compound for a "lava flow" effect.
Standard simulation is fine, but usually lacks the precise control that some projects need. This tool was created with mainly two things in mind : speed and ease of setup, and directability : control over the "where" and "how" of the resulting flow.
In the original version, each control curve had to be added separately, one by one. This could quickly become a pain when used with a lot of curves. After major reworking (and some jumping through hoops), it now works with curve groups - which is much faster and easier to set up and control.
Finally, a second, post-process compound is used to edit the resulting mesh, while calculating accurate UV texture coordinates.
