Splendid work ! I like the drawings, AND the animation, AND the sound !

As I'm doing the same kind of stuff as you, I'd be curious to know how much time it took ? And how much money you got to do it ? (hope I'm not too inquisitive ?)

    And I also have a moustache !
  • Dale Hayward 2 years ago
merci! we worked on it from about may to the end of sept, but we did everything from script, to boards, to colour, to animation. Also it was only 3 of us, so 5 months was a good length of time. The budget was low low low, but the message was extremely important, so it was worth it

I did the same type of work this summer ( big message, we did everything, no money), and I'm really curious to know if my "no money" in France is the same line as your "no money" in Quebec...

Didnt find your email anywhere, but you may contact me at if you like...

The information is so disturbing that chills were running up and down my body the whole time... I can't get angry anymore over these kind of information, and that's bad... Now I'm just sad... You did a great work! Kudos!
  • Dale Hayward 2 years ago
it feels great to help spread this message & i highly recommend seeing the rest of the documentary, H2oil. i think we should all get angry about the insanity that is going on out there, but really we need to look at ourselves & ask how are we contributing to the damage?

This is just a great lesson for animator out there ... its not about the tech rather the message. congrats, awsome work.

For those of you who speak German, this is a very good and alarming documentation about the oil sand in Canada:

Oh, Canada. Powerfully good at communicating so many complicated and sad things, but the eye candy keeps you from averting your eyes.

I figured this had to take a while. Amazing work. Question: how do you get the pipes to grow
  • Dale Hayward 2 years ago
that was one of the easy parts, they're just single drawings & i animated a mask revealing them.

as a chemical engineering student who has toured the open face mines near fort mac and been to a few refineries, i am super impressed by this. this is artistic, accurate and inspiring! thanks so much for posting..finally a succinct way of explaining why i am not working in the oil patch

so great to hear, thanks a lot. the closest thing i came to experience this insanity was through the internet, i think being there in person would make me furious beyond control

    wonderful animated sequences!

it's infinitely easy, yet, in the same breathe infinitely difficult to be a Canadian in the world's state of constant hunger for resources.

as one who dealt with the aspects of growing up around 'oil' and 'industry'; the story & message really resonates with me.

    well done.

  • Great! and (the content) sad at the same time. These guys just won't stop with extracting also the last drop of oil.... W.E. did a project that deals with long-term thinking (that would include re-thinking and abandoning further use of fossil fuels) a while ago: vimeo.com/6817918 All the best! Tobias, W.E. DesignLab.

  • You have exposed -- in a simplistic, well researched and documented capsule -- a hidden time bomb made possible by greed and complacency.

Anybody can understand this, even a 4 year old! What are we doing about it? You did your part, the rest is up to us...
  • Dale Hayward 2 years ago
cheers man! we wanted to be as concise as possible, it's very easy to get lost in all the insane facts. Like you said we all need to do our part because this problem was also caused by us all
  • Amen bro'

Great work, exposing greed and the amount of natural limited resources it takes to recover the oil from the sand is very good work. We are working on the same issues, EPA and other mandated industries.

from someone who used to work in the oil and gas industry - thank you for opening eyes. I knew I didn't like the industry when I was there. Now it really turns my stomach even more. How do we connect that distaste to change our everyday habits now?
