3. Denver to Singapore (and back) in 5 minutes
2 years ago
Music: Quantic - Not so Blue - quantic.org

On a whim I wondered what it would look like if I took a still image with my S90 every couple of minutes/hours on my recent weekend trip to Singapore and then made a time lapse from it. For the motorcycle shots I fabricated a neck strap from an iPhone cable and some masking tape that the hotel gave me. Kind of like a cheap version of the Microsoft SenseCam

If you look hard, when I deplane on the Tokyo to Singapore flight you can see my Uncle and me - he was randomly on the same flight.

Did you ever get tired of your camera?
  • David DAngelo plus 2 years ago
Hey Shayla! How's it going? Yeah - it got annoying at times, funny looks from folks for sure. The makeshift neckstrap made it a bit easier, especially on the motorcycle.

I have mixed feeelings about this:

    - One one hand, it's a neat idea to portray everything you've seen (or your camera) during this one trip.

    - On the other hand: How boring can flying really get? Same old airplanes, same old (cheap) food, same old wasted hours, same old airport design most everywhere on this planet. Just how much more boring can it get?

I'm writing all this with a lot reluctancy, because, whenever I am flying (which is kind of rare), I soo love being in the air and admire all the rest...
  • David DAngelo plus 2 years ago
I hear you for sure - flying can get old - especially when you are made to fly, and to some place that is less than awesome. But, when you're going someplace that you're fired up about it's pretty exciting. There's nothing like the view flying into Singapore at night with all the ships lit up just off the shore. Often, when you're surrounded by a different and unique environment, its effect can be energizing.

In the end, some folks are just wired differently about travel. . .

    Thanks for your thoughts!

You know what I hate ... people complaining about flying.

YOUR FLYING THROUGH THE FRICKIN AIR PEOPLE ... IT'S AWESOME!!!!!!!!!

Nice seat choice on the way there too ... I can't believe they let you man the exit row.

Were you only in Singapore for a day? Your flights seemed to take longer than your actual holiday!

also just curious (and as someone who's been to Denver from Malaysia a bunch of times): why not Denver -> LA -> Singapore?
  • David DAngelo plus 2 years ago
I was there for two days - I just had to take the first day out to keep the video a manageable length.

As for the routing - I eeked a couple extra miles going through Chicago. . .

    Thanks for the note!

Loved this! What's great is that the blurry pictures worked well here where they would have otherwise been deemed useless. Instead they helped convey the sense of motion. Cool idea. Makes me want to go get on a plane to anywhere.

  • By far the most fascinating journey I have seen. That was pure genios, loved every moment.
Highlight was on the plane less then a minute in when you at the food in 2 shots. haha
How big was your memory card, would have has to have been HUGE to fit all those shots!
  • David DAngelo plus 2 years ago
Thanks Ty! I used a 32 gb SD card - but only shot about 6 gig's worth of photos. The S90 in its highest setting jpeg setting is only 1 or 2 megs a photo. When doing timelapses - it's not worth using the raw setting - way too big.

    cheers,
    dave

  • David DAngelo plus 2 years ago
Thanks man! I dig your 1150 GS - you can do a really cool time lapse journey with that beast!!
  • Antonio Caldeira 2 years ago
It takes genius to see what others overlook. Good things most of the time come from simple solutions. Thats the case with your movie. In February i'll do another tour in Morocco and that will be the best time to try to do a time lapse of that tour.
If it only would come as near as good as yours it would be great.
    Keep up the good work!
  • David DAngelo plus 2 years ago
Having a motorcycle as a vehicle would be really cool - especially since you can mount it and power it off the the bike. All sorts of neat angles and mounting points (engine guards give a cool perspective I think.) And then of course when you're in all the cool cities and towns. . . keep me posted - can't wait to see!

Suggestion - get out of the city!!! The magic of many places is in the countryside. How many shopping mall visits do we need in our lives?

Wonderful concept, thanks for sharing. The sequence of the glasses of beer in Tokyo was a nice little bit of potential story telling that I encourage you to pursue in future projects.

Yes, more story telling and...well... more drinking beer!

Overall, I thought the video was stunning. It was a great concept, and really well executed.

Just my two cents, but I felt like certain parts could have used a couple more frames thrown in there. For the most part, the video was very easy to follow, but at times, the pacing for the motion just didn't feel right. The speed at which you moved seemed to vary slightly. Ex: 10 feet of walking would be portrayed by 3 frames in about half a second at one part, but at a different time, 10 feet of walking would be 5 frames over the course of .75 of a second. I hope that math made sense!

Again, my opinion. I mean no offense. D:
  • David DAngelo plus 2 years ago
Daniel - thanks for the comments. And don't sweat it - no offense taken. A thought for you to consider - about a week or two ago I made a comment on Gabriel Leigh's video called Frequent Flyer vimeo.com/7167640. You should check it out - he did a very good job. Anyways, I commented about watching out when he did a tilt and had a .6 soft grad filter on. (54 seconds in - I thought I was very clever for noticing this.)

Again, it's my opinion and I mean no offense by this, but let's just say after reading your 'advice' I now know how Gabriel felt after reading my 'advice.'

There are moments of brilliance in your piece. I had a fun time watching it, and then I had heartburn watching it again, looking for all the times when you must have been uncomfortable. A few months back I did this timelapse, ( vimeo.com/6887056 ) and the most uncomfortable part was shooting out the window. The guy in front of me was pissed that the shutter was going off every second, and I kept looking over my shoulder, just waiting for the stewardess to make me put the camera and tripod away. Thank you for sharing your journey. I look forward to the next one.
  • David DAngelo plus 2 years ago
That was awesome!!! Great idea to use the tripod in the plane - that looked hot! I just used an S90 and it was pretty near to silent.

Just saw on one of your comments you were interested in a panning rig. I bought a Celestron telescope for the tripod and panning head. A couple brackets and it makes it a really cheap unit.

Thanks for the comment - the best part about this whole video thing I did is now being able to see the stuff others have done - never would have thought to look before.

Some part of it were pretty good (i.e. traveling with a scooter), but watching this over a course of 5 minutes can be very dizzy, plus the choice of music made me more headache after watching it 4 minutes into the film. Idea has been done. Not that original but thanks for sharing you trip with us.

how random to come across your video! I'm trying to see sample shots of the S90 desperately. And I wanted to know what your feedback on it? --

    Amazing Film!! BTW.
  • David DAngelo plus 2 years ago
The S90 is killer! Have really enjoyed it - the LX3 is definitely a bit wider, but the S90's form factor is better. The low light capability is quite nice and I've been able to avoid using the flash. Recently I printed an 8x11 and it looked good, but not nearly as good as a digital SLR. Need to see how much better a RAW image prints though. Cheers - Dave
