Fourth in the unintentional "series", after Sofia, Dublin and San Francisco.

This time it's Venice Beach in LA that is the focus.

Very different from the other 3 in that all the sound and music was recorded on location using just the simple Rode Video Mic plugged straight into the 7D.

New version graded with Magic Bullet Looks.

More on my blog at philipbloom.co.uk. Where I talk about what gear I used to including lenses, filters and support.

Jan !, when are you going to be on Maui, I promised you a personally guided island trek ! Should be a blast..

Wow Philip, nice piece here.. I lived in LA for 5 yrs and would frequent Venice just to people watch.. It's where I saw my first Canon XL1 in real life, Ha ! Seems like a looong time ago.. Funny how Venice seems to be this timeless enigma that just keeps running.. Was it your first time there ? This is one of my favorite video's of yours just cause it feels so raw and representative of Venice beach... Very nice.. You gotta do the 3rd street promenade next.. Some crazy talent there..

    Love and Aloha, iamKP-

hey philip, love the shots at dusk with the sun in the background. that was probably my favorite in the "series". congrats on a new blossoming relationship too, so glad you honored her with that cameo. still learning from you sir.

    that one really touched me!
for me, this "series" begins to be a kind of (also unintentional) statement about human condition.

Really fantastic, and a big improvement on the last few, which, while excellent kit demos and wonderful looking videos, have lacked substance and meaning. This one was thick with meaning, and had a great mini-documentary feel.

As well as showing off what cock slappingly good video the 7D can produce, for me this video has also propelled your 'people' series into something more serious and interesting, and I really look forward to seeing how far you can go with it. Great work!

  • Loved how you devoted some longer segments to let "New York" tell his story–he was the real deal. Agreed this is my favorite in the series so far. Impressed with the Rode's sound, AGC can be a pain. Care to share your "tweaked" picture profile with the masses?

Nice work. Enjoy watching your "people" series. Keep it going.
Question. Do you think your last two, Venice and San Fran (5D) @ 24P would show well in a movie theater via digital projection? Do you think the average movie goer would notice a difference in the 5D's converted 24P and the 7D's 24 P on these two pieces?

refreshing stuff ~ particularly liked the brief sunset shots...

it looked like you used more than one lens, correct me if i'm wrong; the basketball shot and one of the watch tower shots (3:30) seemed like a wide-angle; both of which have bands in the sky... i know magic bullet's vignette feature does that sometimes ~ but i guess that's not it this time.

anyhow ~ neat work, thanks for posting.!

I agree with the general sentiment that this is the "best" in the series so far. It's the voices of the people that makes the difference for me. Two questions if you have time to answer.
    1. Did you get the guitar player all in one take?
    2. Many people have commented about the camera overheating. Have you had this happen?
  • Philip Bloom pro 2 years ago
    yes all in one take.

I had overheating on my pre-production camera but not my current one

It's fantastic to see what that 'simple' and relatively cheap peace of gear can do!

I'm a tv-director and I'm planning on using a DSLR as a "second unit" on a travel series...
I can imagin that, when skillfully used, that the material coming from the DSLR might even 'overglow' the material shot with the much more expensive Digital Betacam...

If you're doing any workshops in Europe some time soon, I will surely try to be part of that!

    Thanks so much for sharing!!
  • Nicolai Amter plus 2 years ago
I have just shot a job in Ghana for a client. with a DOP shooting on a Sony PDW-F350L and me doing 'second unit' on my 5D mkII. Worked very well. Think the 5D stuff is much more film-like and not only because of the shallow depth of field. Will upload some soon.
  • Philip Bloom pro 2 years ago
    look forward to it Nicolai.

Shows the good and the bad of the 7d, or the dSLR's. Picture quality is very good, but the DOF is a blessing and a curse. I give you cudos for keeping the interviews in focus as much as they kept moving in and out of the focal range.

Fine work as always. Like a glimpse of the under-belly of society.
  • Philip Bloom pro 2 years ago
I could easily have made the the DOF deeper but this was my choice. I was shooting around f1.4 on some of them. My own fault!
  • Chael Rosenberger 2 years ago
Well let me clarify and say I think it worked perfectly for your piece. Very intimate feel and well done, as all the videos I've seen you craft. My comment was meant as a general observation, thinking about other applications and such.

    The grade is great.

The original version could have been done by (almost) anyone, but this graded version is like a BB King song intro: as soon as you hear the first few notes, you know it's BB.

Well, with this, as soon as you see the color of a few shots, it's undeniable Bloom (or a serious imitator).

    Bravo.
