Jennifer Wilson shares the story behind this unique musical instrument, a bamboo string instrument that was brought to Australia by Vietnamese refugee Minh Tam Nguyen.
It's an invented instrument which Minh carefully constructed out of found objects. Minh taught music and he used the dan tre to tell his story, and remind himself of the country and family that he left behind.
The instrument was donated to the National Museum of Australia when Minh was reunited with his family in Australia in the 1990s.
Jennifer is a curator at the National Museum of Australia.
