The Starlight Mints - "Cracker Jack"
June 10, 2009
Turner Hall Ballroom
Milwaukee, WI
Starlight Mints arrived in Milwaukee for a show with Evangelicals just a few weeks after releasing their new album, Change Remains on Barsuk Records. We weren't quite sure where we wanted to capture the band, but we were itching to get out of the venue and take advantage of the nice weather and very little wind. We walked the couple of short blocks over to Old World 3rd St. and into the new Cheese store that sits on the corner. We'd been in the building before when Wilco was in town, so we were familiar with the building and it's accommodating owners. We did two take's on this one. The first had Allen descending the stairs inside the cheese store and eventually joining up with the rest of the band. You see a little bit of that at the end of this clip. On the walk back Allan worked out a solo acoustic version of "Cracker Jack" that worked out pretty well. The song concludes back in the Turner Hall Ballroom parking lot as opening back Evangelicals are arriving. It's always cool to see what songs the artists choose to perform during these sessions. "Cracker Jack" appears on The Dream That Stuff Was Made Of and was a perfect choice for this, we're so happy they reached back into their catalog and brought it to us.
