Karaoke is a big part of the entertainment scene in Singapore. Some people use it as an excuse to go out pubbing, others just like to sing. "KTV" means that there are rooms for hire, where your party can select songs from a book, key some reference numbers into a device like a remote control, and have the songs play on a hi-fi. The lyrics come up on a TV screen to make it easier to sing along with the music. Many KTV lounges, and all Karaoke pubs, also have an open bar area where you can really make a fool of yourself in public (that's where I always go).
