Isn’t it a little bit crazy to think of tiny manual wind plastic robots as marching saltcellar and pepper pot? Being a wiggy and wiggly Christmas gift my salt ’n pepper bots never got to a kitchen or dining room. They stayed in my office until I had the idea for this film.
My inspiring example „Once Upon a Time in the West“ features long, slow scenes sometimes with no dialogue at all - as in the famous duel scene. The plot evolves from slow movements of the actors, close-up views of their faces and a choreography of camera angIes.
I hit on the idea of replicating all this with my robots after I happened to see the „table dolly junior“ mentioned in the closing credits. Except this brilliant device no special equipment was used for making this film and soundtrack – just two consumer cameras, macbook, garage band and electronic piano.
When presenting the result of our work to friends and colleagues I had to realize that age disparities matter. Some younger people just didn’t understand the allusion. In Germany „Once Upon a Time in the West“ had its first release in August 1969. Despite not being so popular in the US the movie was cult in Europe ever since. But not for all, it would seem.
