at the end, it felt like a short Asimov story.

That is the biggest compliment any sci fi film maker could get...

Very compelling. Why did you start with kid picking his nose? It's not funny, sets the wrong tone. The FX are superb. How much of the set was actually built? Noticed long list of set builders. Integration of CGI and hand built excellent. Rethink your open shot of the kid. Otherwise this is 4 stars.
  • Constant van Hoeven 2 years ago
It's not supposed to be funny. It makes him human.
There is no way I'm going back to editing anyway. I did this film 2 years ago. Thanks though.

I think the nose picking works alongside with him messing with the cup. Lovely short, very welll made. Good job.

I watched it start to finish. The technical side of things are great, nice close up rendering shots. I liked the cup scene, I liked the fear aspect, I liked the depiction of the soul. A statement on life, nice job.

Watch it again and you get what's happening.
    SPOILER
Human souls are being harvested and put in robots to extend our lives - our dear friend who watches monitors is the last soul around and is harvested because his job is complete.

Awesome work. Makes me feel inspired to work on my own idea for a film, if only I had your talent.

Also, the short he was watching on the screen when he was messing around. I know I saw it at some point, were you involved with that one as well?
  • Constant van Hoeven 2 years ago
No. this was a thesis project of somebody who graduated the year before we did. We needed something that we could get the rights to. So we got this film to show on the screen.

That was very very good. Left wanting more for sure. How many man/woman life hours did that take to make do you think?
  • Constant van Hoeven 2 years ago
Twenty or even more set builders. Twenty people on set for four days. Then 5 guys working six days a week, ten hours a day, for half a year on the CGI. Plus two dozen computers.

Someone has deep pockets. Thank you for your very informative answer. . . . just saw your $7k budget reply below . . . change that to; you must have very good contacts as well as a network of very enthusiastic friends . . .

Like my friend Bob here, I am very very impressed. Of course you want to know stuff like how was the budget, right? and I am just as impressed with the real 'directing' and story-telling aspects as with the FX. My compliments, Constant!

    $7000 budget....

2003-2007. Just a rookie. Henk was the one who greenlit my project in 2007. You live in NYC? I'm close by. Upstate NY.

There's a lot to like about this. I think it the runtime could be cut in half, though.

I really like it. Amazing production values. The visual and sound effects are great. I don't think its long. I think it needed that time for us to get to know about the environment and the character. BTW what was your audition process for such a silent role? I really dig it.
  • Constant van Hoeven 2 weeks ago
Theatre actors. They are used to working in invisible 'worlds'
