A project about communication in public space with support from the cabaret voltaire in Zurich.
I dressed up as a painter with a easel, coat & cap and stroke my camp on a public and frequented place in Zurich, the Paradeplatz.
I didn't actually draw my picture, but wrote down the words that describe my motif at the actual position. The idea was that people who'll look over my shoulder see it and ask me about it. Then I would simply reply by writing on the cancvas in a different color (Black to "paint" my picture and orange to communicate with the passersby).
At first it was difficult to start a conversation, people seemed to be confused or not interested. But the longer I was sitting there (in total almost an hour) the more people talked to me and started conversations.
The last person was the best one, Carmela! Also after I finished my performance we had a nice talk about communication in pubic space and how one is much to shy or scared of talking to stranger, but as soon as many people find something interesting and there is a connecting case, they start to interact.
Unfortunately it's all in german (swiss-german).
"The people have too much fear, they don't talk to each other. Everyone stays alone..."
