    That was awesome.
How much do these lenses cost?
  • Philip Bloom plus 20 days ago
    a LOT of money!
  • Colin Cabalka 20 days ago
    Thank you Mateo,
Umm actually you cant buy the lenses, Panavision rents them out, but not by themself unless you work for them.

But you could get like really expensive Zeiss Primes/Ultra Primes and then some how learn the flanges/mounts and build an adapter yourself to mount them. There might be Zeiss-Canon mount adapters, I just use a Panavision - Canon Adapter for them.

Same league as Philip Bloom's "people of" genre.
  • Colin Cabalka 20 days ago
Wow, this comment is definitely an honor, thank you :)
I learn from the best, considering i discovered this style from Mr. Bloom himself.

    Colin,
Nice hand held work, screen direction and framing great. Subject matter interesting. Editing excellent. I like the shutter angle for some but I would have like to have some shots without the "Gladiator effect". You are obviously an experienced shooter.

Personally I don't think the Panavision lenses bought you anything. I could have seen a similar picture with Canon or Zeiss ZF lenses. But if you used them for fun or a test (cool). It is nice that with the 7D they are a possibility but I think you'd only see the difference on a theatrical release and maybe not even there.

My big issues were in the grading. I noticed many different color temperature issues between scenes and the contrast/gamma seemed a little pasty to me. This may be in the transfer to Vimeo, but sometimes I know we have to color correct the video for Vimeo and do a dozen tests till it looks right on Vimeo.

I know Phil was the first to comment and I agree that it was cool to use Panavision lenses. In my whole carrier we have never used Panavision, (partly because we are in Chicago and they are in LA) and partly because they are expensive and our projects were not theatrically released so we didn't want to spend the extra budget on them.
  • Colin Cabalka 18 days ago
    Thanks Steve,
I love to compose and choose good subject matter. Editing is always fun :)

Tell me a little about (Shutter Speed - Digital cameras dont use angles but no worries, haha! ) What is the Gladiator effect?

I think the Panavision lenses showed with the Lens flares and quite a bit with the Color. I realized after going to Prores for Vimeo that it desaturated and decontrasted a bit.... Hmmm any tips? just color in advance for that?? This was my raw footage and first cut, I will try to get a graded one up....

I used Panavision lenses because I work for them and have good access to their resources, so thats a huge blessing. They also just have a huge variety of focal lengths and speeds, so it was nice to have the flexibility. I especially enjoyed the wide angle lenses, which are harder to come by for Canon.

I will shoot some more stuff with some of the Super Speed Zeiss' and see what I can pull together..

Thanks for the feedback, I really appreciate it.
Keep it coming, especially the criticism, I can always learn.

Looks great! I'm thinking about buying a 7D myself, any regrets?
  • Colin Cabalka 18 days ago
No regrets at all! Just get some good audio equipment and some BIG extra harddrives if you wanna shoot alot! (2 batteries, 40GB of card space, and save for good lenses)
Its a great camera and opens a lot of possibilities for people with a love for shooting.
    Thanks alot!

Very nice Colin. What made you choose the panavision lenses over a standard Canon lens?
  • Colin Cabalka 18 days ago
Hey Blake thanks for checking it out, appreciate it.
I used the Panavision lenses because I had access to a wide variety of focal lengths and I prefer the Zeiss and various pana glass more just because ofthe color and way they take in light. Plus the lenses are setup for pulling focus with a follow focus already. Definitely a blessing to use their stuff while working for them.

Colin that was amazing. I see your style and technique really maturing. I felt like I was there.
I loved that you got so many candids but you also weren't afraid to get in there and really capture the diversity and complexity of Venice.
I am very impressed. You can come shoot a wedding with me anytime.
Oh yeah... I loved the lens flares!
  • Colin Cabalka 18 days ago

Love the out of focus at 00:17.
I'd like to know how to obtain round light spot. Is the lenses? with my zeiss ZF 50mm i can't obtain it..
  • Colin Cabalka 18 days ago
Yeah man, its all about depth.
Keep your aperture wide open or close to it (1.2-1.8, 2.0 - 2.8 and you should get some depth...)
    Thanks luigi!
  • luigi tadiotto 17 days ago
I know that, but i cant abtain a round effect out of focus light (sorry for my english, i cant explain better...), with my lenses it seems more exagonal...

agreed with the gladiator "high shutter speed look". It starts to hurt my eyes towards the middle. humor me next time and just bring a tripod. It seems to defeat the purpose of using panavision lenses and then going handheld with a camera. Nice choice of music and good editing. I did enjoy it alot but I'm not just gonna jerk you off like everyone else(besides steve). Great job! can't wait to see what's next.
  • Colin Cabalka 18 days ago
    Thanks Josh,
I think handheld is some of my run/gun personal style.
People get kicked out for having tripods man, it just makes you look like youre more serious and then they ask for permits and stuff. Easy to shoot handheld and look SEMI like a tourist hahaha (big lenses, no..)
Ill shoot some more tripod stuff next time
Keep checkin back for more, and thanks for being str8 up!

that was great. i love how you use the music to portray almost an adventure but still have it show the hectic yet normal life of venice beach. excellent
  • Colin Cabalka 18 days ago
    Hey Matt,
thanks for enjoying it, its not my work though man, its the people that make it so interesting, I just try to capture it from different perspectives!
    YEA!

Very cool stuff. Diggin the footage!

I didn't know that Pana had a Canon mount. Does the camera have to be modified for it to work or is it removable? Living in West Hills it's a 5 minute drive to Panavision to check it out. : )
  • Colin Cabalka 15 days ago
They do have a Canon mount, but its a custom thing they do. They are hard to come by, but its not worth owning one really because you cant own the gear, you have to rent it, but its been fun to use while I am working there!
  • Christopher Simmons 15 days ago
That's great, and it requires no modification to the Canon camera? Very cool.

Arri Standard and PL mount lenses will only work above 50mm because of the rear element issue.

I realize that I would have to rent it instead of buying it, that's fine, Panavision makes amazing tools. Thanks for sharing this information! : )

Great video, good, interesting shots and cut very nicely with the music. Honestly, I forgot that I came here to see some 7D footage, because I just got caught up in it.
  • Colin Cabalka 10 days ago
    Mr. Harris,
I believe you are a kind man. I appreciate the feedback, and Im glad I could help with your 7D Footage Viewing Experience. Have a sweet day!

hey very nice shots and editing.
ive seen 7d footage before and not impressed but your film and p blooms both in venice b , looked amazing..
so is it the light there ? .. is it the lenses you used ?.. or something else ? ...if you had a choice .. 7d or 5d2 ?

alos did you film it with that big rig ? .. cant see how that would be indiscreet without a permit lol !!

i was at panavision headquarters in london last month .. great place to visist .. so much going on .. got a panny t shirt too lol

    Cool Video.

How do you determine your shutter speed when shooting video?

    Thanks in advance
  • Colin Cabalka 10 days ago
    Thank you Dale,
I just set my aperture and ISO first, then I will set my shutter speed, sometimes I will try to leave shutter speed consistent and just change aperture and ISO.
  •
  • Dale Honning 10 days ago
Colin, Thanks for the help. I will try that and see the results.
Another Question, if you don't mind... I have been trying to upload a video to Vimeo unsuccessfully. It is an MP4, under 500mb and I always get bumped off about half way through... Any suggestions?
