Very nice reel (and a lovely soundtrack, too!)

    even better on repeated viewing.

did you regrade all the material from the originals to be specifically in this reel, or are we seeing here the footage as it actually appeared in various projects? The color sense is remarkably consistent (and v pleasing).

    thanks!
  •
  • Thanks so much...most of the work isn't out yet so I needed to grade it on my own. However I dont think it will change to much when the projects are released...i tried to keep it faithful to how it was shot.

The work shot on 35 was graded at a post house

    Eric,
I would say for a cinematograhers reel, this is of the best I've seen. Lighting, incredible, good to see someone not just using the sun as their lighting kit, framing and screen direction wonderful (which could be directors doing) still wonderful. Many times DP's are stuck with a bad directors decision and still has to put it on their reel. So if the director relied on you, or you had great directors (Kudos). Great choice of music, editing excellent. Most important length was perfect, DP's have a tendency to make reels too long, because they edit them and they love every shot (sure they do, they made them) but using every shot is not the definition of editing. Most of you know I don't give glowing reviews. Eric is getting one. Fellow DP's, this is how a DP's reel should look.
  •
  • thanks Steve! i certainly have worked with some great directors, Rob Chiu (find him here), Tristan Patterson, Thymya Payne, Dave Cole (etc) that are all represented on my reel.
I certainly left a few shots that i loved on the cutting room floor...i think one thing that helps is keeping all of the footage you shoot, because the take that may be used for the film isnt necessarily best for your reel. A few shots or pieces of shots i have in here probably wont make it to the final product.

That is a great reel. You have a wonderful style and a natural talent by the looks of things.
    Enjoy your bright future man.

  • Just beautiful...as a director, I would love to work with you. As -GO- says, enjoy a bright future.

  • You are a great image maker.

  • Frederick Gramlich 24 days ago
Amazing. What camera do you use?
  •
  • The grainier images are on 35, some of the commercial portrait shots are RED, a couple with the HPX 500, the last stuff and some of the guy with the sweatsuito (sic) are with the canon 5D (and a little Ex3 with the lens adapter).

The song is called "Teardrop", originally a track from Massive Attack. This cover is sung by Jose Gonzales, a Swedish singer-songwriter, on the album "In Our Nature".

    Great stuff!!

I notices one of the shots from a short i saw on NSI called Grand Wheel. Did you do all the cinematography for that film?? you weren't credited at all on that website ... cinematographers don't get the respect they deserve sometimes.
  •
  • jayyao 24 days ago
    Nice song track! Great!
  •
  • i shot the Carnival stuff at the LA fairgrounds for grand wheel...im listed as "additional cinematography by" The rest of Grand wheel is shot by Erik FOrssell who's an amazing DP! Funny story...we shot for about an hour without a permit and then got verbally assaulted by the security there...we were not so kindly asked to leave.
  • A Rigged Production 24 days ago
Good on you! Fuck permits! I hate those capitalist pieces of shit that try and charge you for shooting out in the open, or anywhere for that matter.

Stick it to the man \m/

Incredible stuff Eric, I've watched this a couple times now! I loved the use of flares, specifically around 2:07 and 2:09. Were these natural or done in post? If you could share your secrets that would be awesome!
  • Nick, thanks. The flairs were all done on set. For the one in the tunnel I allowed the back light to come into the lens. For the portrait of the woman i had two lite panels in front of her on either side of her face and a silk for the sunlight (which was kinda coming in from the top side i believe?) for the flare my gaffer/key grip had a 12inch mirror behind her that would reflect the light on and off into the lens. We were trying to get flares the whole shoot. THe lenses were Arri Ultra Primes.

    Very cool, thanks eric!

I actually watched it twice. Tell me a bit more about yourself. How do you structure your rates? What was this reel shot on primarily? Your style is very European, especially the off crops, it reminds me of Robert Frank's: Americans.
  • wow thanks Morty! The Americans was a huge reference for Tristan and I for the skateboard documentary. The reel was shot on HD and 35...cameras were the RED, the Canon 5D, HPX500, Panavision 35mm (completely forget which one), and one shot with an HVX200. My rates vary depending on the project and how broke i am at the time =)

A very good friend of mine once told me 'It takes a great deal of effort to make something appear effortless'
This is a really nice reel!
I tend to be a minimalist when it comes to videography (of course sometimes the situation requires a bunch of artificial lighting to achieve that look).
I really appreciate your work! thanks for sharing it!

Spectacular work, what do you think about the 5D?
  • Hi Justin,
I think despite its limitations the 5D is a great tool.
The 5D can give you lush, vivid imagery but at the same time you dont have much latitude in post to color correct whats been shot, and sometimes when you cant control the lighting its hard to get the exposure completely correct. That being said for the price point its impossible to beat...but any camera that allows you to use 35mm lenses is great for making films.
  • Justin Ho 22 days ago
Thanks, yeah I'm on the edge right now on weather I should by the 5D especially since canon announced the 24p firmware upgrade. But I'm holding myself back waiting to see what els comes out. Trying to get as much info on these new DSLRs. And by the way I love that lens flare you had in that one shot, how did you create that affect, was it done physically or in post?
  • Ya its always tough to know when and what to buy. If you have the money though im not sure if anything better will be coming out in the next three to four months. Because the camera itself is relatively cheap, its the most replacable part of my kit. I bought what i thought were the best lenses and accessories so that i will always have those, and only need to change the camera body when the next best thing comes along. Its good to own your own gear so you can shoot and shoot and shoot.

The lens flare was done in camera. On some i had a light panel shooting into the lens, on others i had a mirror reflecting the sun into it
  • Justin Ho 21 days ago
Nice! Yeah thats all I ever want to do, shoot shoot and shoot.

Eric, congratulations from me too. can you please tell me wich camera did you use at these shots: 0:40, 1:01 and 1:22.
You would help me a lot! I'm on the search for my new pro camera and these shots were just left me speechless... Well done again! :)))) thanks
  • HI Thanks,
The shot with the girl in the desert :40 was with the RED camera and Arri Ultra Primes. The shots around 1:01 were on 35mm, the shots in the car at 1:22 were done with the 5D and a zeiss zf lens. All different cameras.
  • cybersun 14 days ago
At 1:01 when you say 35mm you mean film??
Actually at 1:22 are the shots after the car shots, with the blonde girl and the crystals at the light. 5d as well?
These are all expensive cameras.... I am jealous :) Powerful tools in talented hands. Best combination.
  •
  • yup 35mm film...i believe it was shot on kodak 5218. Shots after 1:22 are the canon 5D as well.
