This is a video I created in 1994 using news clips of The Los Angeles Riots of 1992. I did this mainly as an exercise in using a CMX edit controller and 1" videotape machines. I used a song that was popular at the time... and yes, I'm a white guy.
"Fuck tha Police" is a protest song by the gangsta rap group N.W.A on the album Straight Outta Compton. Despite not being a single, it ranked #417 on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. It highlights many of the tensions between black urban youth and the police (widespread resentment towards the LAPD boiled over 3 years later, in the 1992 Los Angeles riots following the Rodney King incident).
The Los Angeles Riots of 1992, also known as the 1992 Los Angeles Civil Unrest, were sparked on April 29, 1992 when a jury acquitted four Los Angeles Police Department officers accused in the videotaped beating of African-American motorist Rodney King following a high-speed pursuit. Thousands of people in the Los Angeles area rioted over the six days following the verdict. Copycat riots and anti-police actions took place all over the United States and Canada. Widespread looting, assault, arson and murder occurred, and property damages topped roughly $1 billion USD. In all, 53 people died during the riots and thousands more were injured.
