From mid June thru mid August, about an hour off the coast of Cancun, whale sharks congregate in large numbers to feed in the nutrient rich waters near Isla Mujeres. The biggest fish in the sea feed on the smallest animals in the sea. Whale Sharks have no teeth ... they filter huge amounts of plankton thru their mouths. On July 4th weekend (2013), there were about 30 whale sharks, ranging from 20 to 35 feet in length. It was an incredible experience to swim with these beautiful, graceful mammoths of "el mar". Amazing. The first of many, many trips in the future to swim with whale sharks.
