I think this was at the White Horse Temple. Missy and I were buying some Buddha necklaces (which all the monasteries sell) when one of the monks overheard us speaking English to each other. He called us over, pulled out a book he was using to teach himself English, and asked for our help pronouncing things. It's interesting how little we think about our own language. We spent a long time on the pronunciation of "girl" and the "irl" sound, which is very difficult for native Chinese speakers. "Book," "took," etc. were interesting to dissect. Isolating certain English vowel combinations can be tricky. Even as a native speaker, I sometimes had to stop and think.

We read through the pronunciation guide with him for 15-20 minutes before we had to leave. He gave us some postcards from the monastery to thank us.
