A really short (13 minute) film of the performance given at the end of a week's workshop on Handel's 'Xerxes' by 4th year undergraduate voice students at Trinity Laban in 2012, (mainly) in English.

We spent the week looking at 18th Century ideas about acting, and combining them with naturalism and a little bit of clowning, working on creating comedy and pathos by using and dropping formal gestures. We also played with the idea of absolute power, as the opera tells the story of an all-powerful emperor's realisation, that certain things (love and weather) are beyond his control. There's also a lot of dressing up and drag of all kinds.

At the end of the week, the students gave a 60 minute performance to friends and fellow students. This is my first attempt to make a film of work which is both unfinished, and very theatrical, and I hope it does justice to the talent and hard work of the group.
