We just completed a shoot for a trailer for a Podcast called The C Word: Naked. This is just a quick little throw together of a few shots, the actual trailer is being edited as we speak. The audio was recorded to an external solid state recorder, but the audio in this clip is just from the onboard mic.

Very intriguing, Evan. What processing did you do to the footage? It looks a little more saturated than I normally see from the D300s. I quite like it.

Hi, used the infamous Magic Bullet Looks, applied a Vignette, a soft blur to the edges and messed with the curves a little, nothing too much.

How do you get those really smooth zoom ins from the dlsr?

Really depends on the lens, if it is a smooth lens then you can probably do it manually, otherwise yu will need to add a second follow focus unit and set the gear on the zoom part of the lens (just make sure that it is not one of those lenses that changes size as it zooms. That being said, I very rarely zoom during a shot, if you look at most feature films, they dont often zoom, rather they move thr camera on track, in fact most film lenses are prime lenses and dont actually zoom.

Nice one Evan! The camera movement looks smooth, I am sure thanks to the Redrock rig.
I also like the color enhancement you did using MB.
    Great work.

Cheers. Yeah it is amazing how much better the video looks when shot on the Redrock. I did a little handheld video the other day as a bit of a joke and the small jiggles and bumps you get with just handheld made the video look VERY bad.
We did the final colour grade of the shoot the other day, and threw everything at it, but often with Magic Bullet I think less is more, just slight tweaks makes the video looks much better than going to town with effects. I am actually doing some tests as we speak of setting the Nikon to shoot a really flat image to give me more latitude when grading, it means the raw image doesn't look great (I am actually using some RED raw footage as a base) but has plenty of latitude to push the image anyway you want. Will post some tests when I get a chance.

I would love to see those grading tests you mention above. I want to get a D300s myself but I'm still on the fence.

Am about half way through it, had to set aside the playtime to finish some work for Xmas, will definitely have a full post with samples etc up in January.

Do you often have trouble adjusting the shutter speed while filming? This process seemed much easier when done on the Lumix.
Also, when editing, what are your sequence settings? Are you using Final Cut Pro?

Not really, the main issue is you cant really control the ISO. I have found balancing on a grey card and then locking the exposure with the AE lock button gives best results. As for editing, I am editing on Windows with Premiere Pro and a BlackMagic decklink which allows me to play the files back natively without any conversion and monitor in HD. On the general agreed upon approach is to first convert to ProRes 422 files and edit from there.
