Creek Flowing: Big Sur, California
Deep under the coastal redwoods, a creek flows in the shadowed and cool ferns and fallen leaves, swirling and dropping over mini cascades.
Endangered coho salmon spawn and rear their young in these shallow cool channels.
Sword ferns and spreading wood ferns are the common ferns found along this creek. Spore cases called sporangia line frond undersides in clusters.
The cicada shown molted underground 4 times – becoming an adult “instar” by clinging to this moss-covered rock for its final molt.
