Sure. All I did was set my Canon Rebel XT on my SUV's dash (with a rolled up hand towel propping up the lens) and then set my TC80N3 intervalometer to shoot 1 frame per second. It was a very simple setup!
The lens and white balance and exposure all need to be manual, or you will see flickering and other problems. Typically with a sunset shot, you start out with the frames being overexposed one or two stops, so that as the sun goes down, the exposure stays in the ballpark.
Shooting this with a video camera would be different (and easier), as you could probably just roll with auto-exposure. I'm not sure if you would see big jumps in the light or shutter speed.
If you ever have specific questions, feel free to PM me.
Mike, I'm not sure what you mean. It was shot on a DLSR - a JPEG sequence. Typically I shoot RAW, but my camera cannot write to the CF card fast enough for RAW, so I went with jpg.
You know I look for people that actually explain what they did. For that I thank you man!!!! really I do.
I have been asking around for a while how to get the vimeo player in widescreen mode and seem to get no response. can you help me man???
This is the first I have heard about the XSi. I might seriously consider getting one. It looks like it does not have an N3 connection, so yes, it would be same remote port the XT and XTi use, meaning you will have to mod the cable on the TC80N3. I know someone who can mod if for you if you decide to go for it.
Really like this, Tom. Actually did something along the lines of this with my Qatsi video where I mounted my Canon HV30 to a car mount and drove around San Francisco. This video has given me some inspiration when I go back to Hawai'i for Christmas. Great work!
Some people are just born to be photographers. The way you pulled up to the beach at the end and its perfectly composed without even moving the camera. So jealous.
I got linked to this via your stellar 'Mountain Light' Timescape video (amazing work), itself off a result when I was searching for ways to extend my interval batch limit beyond 99 shots. Just to say how impressed I am by what you do, because it's just what I love to do too!
Last year I went on a road trip around Europe, and larked about with my then new DSLR using time lapse and video footage to try and make the most of the 'journey' - megavideo.com/?v=TAZU7Z16 - it is too long for vimeo and chock full of songs I can't really claim to have created...
I want to try something similar, but am concerned about the exposures not syncing up.
