Polish tradition of lighting candles and visiting the graves of the relatives on All Souls Day. Its origins can be traced to the times of Slavic mythology.
The tradition of lighting candles comes from ancient slavic Dziady feast and originally would take place on All Souls' Day.
The first day of November is a holiday in Poland. As many people make journeys to visit the places of
burial of their relatives.
Streets are filled with silent and solemn crowds, and cemeteries glow with thousands of candles, presenting a unique and picturesque scene.

very nice tradition. again there are nice pictures.
i would have tried to bring a more contemplativ athmosphere in the movie.
    greetings from the swiss critics

  • I liked the treatment of lights and shadows, people, respect and memories.
Would have slowed it down a bit... The music did not help it in my opinion...

Anyone at all familiar with the range of ways cultures and regions around the world observe the Day of the Dead--from trick-or-treating and fancy costumes to once bloody affairs that included human sacrifices to the gods of death--would not presume to instruct you, Daniel, on how to structure your own response to it. This video may not be among my favorites of yours--you've set a standard so high that not even you can always reach it--but this somewhat ambiguous mixture of eeriness and ordinariness has a place in the commentaries on that oddest of all holidays. Best to you and Anna.

Theme, as you perfactly know, is rather technicaly (because of the night, very dark) deficult to realize... but it was much more fun to manage to do it.
Next year, I'm sure, I will try once more to catch some picture.... it depence of the weather, or maybe new way of showing them.
    Daniel
    Dearest Friend
to me, it was especially interesting way of presenting the shadows of people where passing by more quickly than in fact.but the candle's lights, the main subject of the film, the symbolic memory were standing still. Just like in real life....
Please tell me, how do You like the sight of my little garden....."Red Autumn" and "Magic Garden".
    With our best wishes...

    Dear Anna,

On technical grounds alone, this kind of video is beyond the reach of all but a few. Daniel is truly gifted. And you are right about the stillness of the candles and the motion of the people. Nowhere, I think, is that more effective than in the sequence that begins at about 2:41 with the lone old man appearing and then disappearing in the stillness of the cemetery, followed by a scene of the people rushing by the motionless candles standing vigil.

I watched the videos of your little garden twice, mostly so I could see again how, in "Red Garden," Daniel had made it, with his selection of shapes, such a sensuous, feminine place--a woman! You must spend many happy hours there.

Warm regards to both of you,

    Ray

I’m always curious to discover what Daniel will do with music in his productions. Conventional wisdom says that happy scenes require happy music, sad scenes need sad music, and so forth—Hollywood has always done well with that approach. The real task for movie-makers, though, is to use sound and music to add another dimension to a film and not always simply to reinforce what one already sees. As I watched this present clip of Daniel’s about remembering the dead, I could imagine that I was not hearing the music we, the living, hear, but their music, the music they hear. I suspect Daniel did not intend that, but by rejecting the conventional approach to music that accompanies films, he allowed the viewer to exercise creative imagination.

Ha! Thank you:) I might note too the details. But all the work I like! I am very sensitive when it comes to music. Some scenes are well cut, only the musical transitions are either too early or too late. Sorry, my honesty, that's why Daniel respected me! I hope at least ... Thanks for your opinion! In general I like his music, but I can not keep my mouth if it is defective;)) Daniel is a great artist, I'll never deny, but he's no musician. Maybe you can help him, instead of praising everything? Friends are there! Greetings and all the best for you! Zofia:)

Sorry, to moje zdanie!;))

What a fine comment, Zofia. Your point about timing is well-taken. (I should have known better--my comments were in fact directed at earlier comments to the effect that the music itself was entirely inappropriate, not at yours.)

I'm not competent to instruct Daniel about music. And, yes, I praise him inordinately, I suppose, but he's good, simply good. I watch his work to learn.

As to your own work, you know well that I admire it. In fact, I think, there has been nothing lately. Can we expect more? In any event. it was good to hear from you, even if it was--quite appropriately--to put me in my place. Best to you, Zofia.

Affter all those words of warmth in your commentary, today while I was riding my bicycle, during one hour yourney, I can't help wandering.... what should I... , to keep, most of all, to be close to the simple truth of the ancient artists, contouring thairs hands inside the caves,
where they lived....moving forward my own ideas, at the same time.....in spite of my own limitations.......

    Ray !!!
    Thanks for all...
please accept my congratulations ,you notice 2:41....
this moment, is the main point of my video.. a kind of a hinge...
