This Side Up is a Michigan-based snowboarding movie by "Fresh Air.". We spent the last winter filming at all of our local spots as well as a few not so local places in order to bring our viewers a video that they can relate to.

This Side Up features: Alex Cato, Andy Chamarro, Dean Ferrari, Erik Zimmerman, Jackson Kimball, Joe Mango, Josh Nelson, Justin Allen, Scott See, Tommy Young, Trevor Jacques, and Trevor Rhoda as well as a ton of local friends and some friends we met along the way.

Thanks to our sponsors: Rome SDS, Lib Tech, Bent Metal, Neff, Von Zipper, and Forum

Thanks to everyone else that we may have forgotten that made this all possible.

what editing system are you using, if its final cut, could you tell me how to make my titles more clear when i import into final cut, thanks. Good Job on the video by the way
  • Stewart Smith 2 years ago
Final cut pro. All of the motion graphic stuff at the beginning was exported from motion as 1080p apple prores 4:4:4. It's a huge file but that's why it's so clear. That and because the project was edited natively on a 1080p 23.98 timeline.

The other individual titles were made in final cut using the basic text generator.

    thank you so much

    no problem man
  • Taylor Thomas 2 years ago
and what are u exporting in? like the film
  • Stewart Smith 2 years ago
this was edited in HDV 1080p 23.98 timebase because probably 60% of my footage was shot on my old Canon XH-A1 and the rest of the footage was transcoded to ProRes 422 1080p24 to match it. It was compressed via quicktime pro to h.264 high quality and scaled to 720p

alright thank you so much for your help, and have you ever had problems with exporting video or titles coming out blurry after you export the video?
  • Stewart Smith 2 years ago
I had trouble with that when i exported my video last year but it was in SD and I didn't know much about compression of motion graphics and which codecs to use for best final quality. It all turned out bad, titles were really soft and poor looking.
  • Taylor Thomas 2 years ago
so how did you fix it ?
  • Stewart Smith 2 years ago
I didn't. I just decided it was because it was SD. When I upgraded to HD the problem went away so I stopped worrying about it.
  • Taylor Thomas 2 years ago
ahhh i see, and are you expanding the video a bit so that it will fit the entire screen and not look wide screened format, you know with the black bars on top
  • Stewart Smith 2 years ago
when viewed on a TV that isnt widescreen the video is letterboxed. on widescreen TVs it fits the whole screen, and when i compressed the video for web, I let quicktime pro letterbox to fit the 1280x720 16:9 aspect ratio, im really not too sure why there is that black frame around the video, but its kind of annoying to me... not enough to bother messing with though.
