On the holiday island of Bali, the mentally disabled are incarcerated and often mistreated. Families are frequently overwhelmed by the situation – and put the sick in chains. Psychiatrist Luh Ketut Suryani aims to free these forgotten people. Katrin Kuntz and Christian Werner spent time with the doctor on assignment for the news magazine, Der Spiegel.
Born in Hanover in 1987, he studied photojournalism and documentary photography at FH Hanover. 2013 internship with the photo editorial team of Der Spiegel. Finalist for the Axel Springer Award and the Alexia Foundation Professional Grant 2013. The reportage was taken with a Leica M9, Summilux 35 mm and 50 mm f/1.4 Asph.
