We were setting up for some astrophotography in the middle of the night on a beach in Tulum, Mexico, when all of a sudden a local conservationist emerged from the darkness and alerted us to the fact that hundreds of baby sea turtles had hatched and were emerging from the beach! Normally, the turtles are guided to the ocean by the moon's reflection on its surface, but the light pollution from the nearby resort was wreaking havoc on their built-in navigation systems. Suddenly, we were given the opportunity to help guide these baby sea turtles to the ocean... it was an amazing and unexpected experience!!!
NOTE: We used "turtle-safe" red lights to light the sea turtles while filming, which was then color-corrected in post-production. Red and amber LED lights are invisible to these marine creatures. Shining white light and camera flashes can disorient these little guys, so please keep them away!
