More footage from the same place as my short "Daybreak". This particular morning was pretty foggy and changed the entire atmosphere of the park. I have never once been to this place and experienced the same thing.

Shot at Marymoor Park in Redmond, Washington with a Canon XHA1 (no adapter)

  • I can't get over how amazing your work is. What time in the morning was this shot?
  • Steven Dempsey 2 years ago
Thanks Michael...This was shot around March, I think and I was there around 5am and shot for a couple of hours.

Amazing cinematography. But we all expect nothing less from you now.

One thing, though, there were some wide shots that probably needed close ups in between. A few of the edits looked like jump cuts. Or maybe they just needed a dissolve or something.

Still, you have an amazing talent!
  • Steven Dempsey 2 years ago
Thanks...you are probably right about the cuts...I don't even think I have the original EDL anymore. Most of these shots are being sold as stock footage...

Good idea...hey, maybe they'll end up on archive.org for the rest of us. =P

Love the mood. Was much post color work used?
  • Steven Dempsey 2 years ago
Thanks, hardly any at all...I think I only tweaked the levels to produce slightly richer blacks...

Enchantingly beautiful. This film confirms my belief that good natural light can't be beating by post production color correction.

  • Brian Overman 2 years ago
Truly amazing. If there wasn't much post color correction, care to share your CPF ;)
  • Steven Dempsey 2 years ago
The preset is called VIVIDRGB. I don't actually have the file available right now but here are the parameter settings:
    Gamma: Cine1
    Color Matrix: Normal
Color Gain: 25 (This is about the limit. Adding more color does very little to enhancing chroma and does a lot for introducing unwanted noise)
    Color Phase: 0
    Knee: Low
    Black: Middle
    Master Ped: -5
    Setup Level: 0
    HDF: Mid
    H/V Detail: 0
    Sharpness: 0
    NR1: Off
    NR2: Off
    Coring: 0
    Red Gain: -2
    Green Gain: -2
    Blue Gain: -3
    RG Matrix: 0
    RB Matrix: 0
    GR Matrix: 0
    GB Matrix: 10
    BR Matrix: 0
    BG Matrix: -13

I don't understand much of color correction, but can I get a photography like this on my Canon 5D Mark II? What should I do?

By the way, the video is incredible. It looks like a David Lean film. Actually it instantly reminded me of the 2005 film adaptation of "Pride and Prejudice" starring Keira Knightley. There's a scene at the end of the film that looks exactly like this. Wonderful! I'm amazed.

Did you add the letterbox in postproduction? And what ratio are you using? Are you just going for something a bit wider than 16X9?

I'm about to order a xha1 and was very pleased with the results you are able to get out of this camera! Chapeau!

Just one thing, in your vids shot with the xha1 there is a lot of red/blue fringing in the outer left and outer right part of the picture. Is this a camera/lens flaw or just an effect to enhance the film-look?
    ref: 00:36 , 01:11 , 02:10 , ...
Nothing shocking but just want to make shure before buying this great cam ;)
edit: this fringing is not visible in center of picture
  • Steven Dempsey 2 years ago
It is a limitation of the lens itself. It is more prevalent at certain focal lengths (particularly in the extreme wide end).
  • Kjewbee plus 2 years ago
    Thanks for your reply!
PS. You seem to have the perfect workflow with this camera. I've seen a lot of footage shot with the XHA1 last couple days - most of the time is so badly interlaced its just not worth viewing imo. Also you master the color/photography/post so bloody well...
Ah... i know what they call it... Experience! ;)
  • Kjewbee plus 2 years ago
Bought an XHA1. And indeed, at wide angle there is a lot of red/green fringing on left and right.
In some shots on a testshoot I did yesterday, you can see it too! See vimeo.com/804461

Are results like this possible by shooting with the A1 right out the box and all the color correction done in post production?
  • Steven Dempsey 2 years ago
When I opened my box, I found a camera and 8 years of experience. The latter is much more important than the former.
  • Kjewbee plus 2 years ago
I've seen fantastic stuff shot with a HV20 and crappy stuff shot with XH-A1.
But overall it seems like the XH-A1 is a fantastic camera able to produce great shots with little experience just because the quality of the camera is so damn good for the buck. If I look at stuff shot on a sony V1 (which is more expencive then the a1) its not better at all!
But the slomo function on the sony's are cool ;)
  • Steven Dempsey 2 years ago
That's kinda my point. You can hand a 35mm Panavision camera to someone and say, I want you to shoot this film exactly like Conrad Hall would. You have the technology in your hands but it's going to take a lot of experience to capture the image just right. This is just a general comment...it's not about me or any other individual...it just is.
  • Kjewbee plus 2 years ago
anyway, cant get experience without a cam ;) so got myself a XHA1 yesterday! Did some test shots and find it to be razorsharp. I'm learning the good (hard) way: no presets or AE programs. All manual! (phew... lucky i know some photography theory) I'm amazed about the amount of DOF I can get with this cam. It takes some zooming but it's great at about f2.8 halfway.
My cat is starting to get bored with me following him around with this piece of equipment ;)
Soon I'll have something posted on vimeo..
Thanks for convincing me of getting this cam (actually your footage did)

If you use the Cast Away theme song for this video, it sounds really good, I tried it. I guess any simplistic, mellow footage goes well with the Cast Away theme song.

  • wow... I am a new videographer, of about only a year now. I use a sony v1u, but my footage quality doesnt look film like enough...do you or does anyone recommend i get a 35mm adapter lens for it? does that letus 35mm adapter already have the 35mm lens attached to it or would I have to choose a lens to go along with it...someone please help...

Steven I wanted to ask you if you shoot in hd when you export in adobe premiere-encore. If you export
to dvd the hdv is compressed even at the highest quality and is it true hd should be converted to sd for dvd or hd should be exported to blue ray(for the best quality). I heard if you shoot hdv and export to dvd its worse than sd on dvd?

I realy don't understand, 60i , 30F , 24F, are just for NTSC ?Can you please tell me? thanks!

Elena, I sent you a message directly because the explanation was a little lengthy for a reply here. The condensed version is that you are using a PAL camera and 25f is just about identical to 24f so just use that.

Steven, I am starting to really like my XHA1 without an adapter. Pieces like this really renew my faith in it...with all the shallow DOF these days. Very nice! Did you use a wide angle of any kind? At around 01:00 it looks like there could be an anamorphic adapter on it.
