Ballistic Publishing's book "d'artiste: Matte Painting 3" (2013) will include video tutorials in which I will be sharing my Matte Painting process from creating a shot all the way through to the final imagery. In these tutorials I'll demonstrate many techniques which I utilize to design successful Matte Paintings. This includes getting an idea out of your head onto paper or screen, working out composition, integrating photographic elements, colour matching in Photoshop and much more. You’ll learn how to create depth perception and mood through atmospheric lighting effects in your Matte Paintings, as well as technical explanations of how to hand of your work down the pipeline. I hope these videos will help you with your digital environment creation process, and inspire you to tackle larger scale shots in the future. The music for this sneak teaser video was created by Erwin Schmidt. A still image of the example Matte Painting can be found here:
For this Matte Painting, I have utilized Photoshop, Mari, Maya and Nuke. On this piece, I followed my own art direction. It is another shot from my "The Bright Darkness" pitch project, which I am currently preparing in my free time. "The Bright Darkness" is a supernatural road movie taking place in 1899. I have been developing this project into a feature film pitch for 2 years now, trying to create a one of a kind unique storytelling experience.
