In 93, the band Cynic (death metal..) used hardware auto-tune all over their album Focus. That's 5 years before Cher :)
  • Jamie Dubs plus 10 days ago
Auto-Tune wasn't released until 1997. Maybe it was a vocoder or talkbox?
  • Amit Elisha 10 days ago
Looked around, you're right, it was a modded vocoder.
  • Maybe but, yes, Paul Masvidal was already doing the "T-PAIN" before t-pain even knew he was t-pain. I'm confused...

It's great how the history comes out about this. I remember watching a doc on auto-tune on PBS but this episode is much much easier and entertaining to watch.

Interesting but factually incorrect - the Cher's track didn't use Auto-tune it used Digitech technology.
  • Jamie Dubs plus 7 days ago
The DigiTech Talker claim was actually Mark Taylor trying to cover up his off-label use of Auto-Tune. 1999 interview: soundonsound.com/sos/feb99/articles/tracks661.htm

very intersting...but tpain is from FL not ATL...
  • yatta plus 5 days ago
Right -- T-Pain was born in Florida but now lives in Atlanta. That's why we said 'Atlanta-based'. ;-)
