When a Man reaches ROCK BOTTOM; there is only one way to go... and it may not be UP.

Filmed over two consecutive mornings, the weather conditions being much the same on both days.

I took a Taxi, with my suitcase, direct from the Airport to 'Petit Bot Bay' which I had 'Googled'!

This short scenario was filmed with the Canon 7d DSLR at 1080 25FPS. Final Cut Pro. Magic Bullet Looks. Imac 24. Stock lens 18 - 135 mm

I had with me a light weight Tripod, a banana and a suitcase.

This is great. As well as great writing, acting, shooting and editing you have a wonderful narration voice. Have you worked as a voice artist?
    Very impressed!

    Thank-you, Go,

No I am not in the media and I have no voiceover experience. I think my resonance might have been assisted by the pair of NTG1 rode mics which I connected to my Sony HVR V1E via XLR inputs. (The 7d sound is too raw and uncontrollable).

I also held a cotton handkerchief taut in front of the mics to eliminate the 'ex-PUH-losives'!

Love the storyline, and the imagery. This DIY filmmaking is very inspiring. Great job, Bob!
  • bob lorrimer plus 2 years ago
The Canon 7d which does not have a reversible LCD is by no means ideal for self photography. However, instant replay helps me nail a shot.

Magic Bullet Looks and a bit of 'post production camera movement does the rest'.
  • Rafael Pires Films plus 9 months ago
what presets did you use in Magic Bullet?
  • bob lorrimer plus 9 months ago
At the time my 7d was totally NEW and I had only the stock lens.

I used STANDARD setting out of the camera.

In Magic Bullet Looks I used the preset called "BENUMBED".

Today I would probably not use a 'preset' as I more familiar with MBL and I grade manually.

However I still like the look of the 'Benumbed' preset and there is no degradation of the original HD file.

I used a warmer setting for when the Character 'finds' the coin! The BLUE LOOK in the multiscreen end title shot is also an MBL preset.

Intriguing short story and great location, being a frequent visitor to Guernsey but never actually visited this beach you make it look nice compared to some of the others i have seen! Effects and quality of video are above average although continuity is slightly off in places. 7/10

  • bob lorrimer plus 2 years ago
I know what you mean .. it must have been the ducks that lowered my score to 7/10 ! They proved to be willing extras but they had no idea of continuity.

I lured the large aggressive green duck toward me with the promise of a half share in my banana.

He was contemptuous of this offering and took his revenge by vigorously attempting to 'bone' my furry windjammer -

Fortunately the Sennheiser was not within it at the time.

One thaler against a Parker, Cartier and Beemer...

Well if gold carries on the same way for a bit it might turn out to have been a good deal :-)

    Charming video - enjoyed that
  • bob lorrimer plus 2 years ago
Whoa! A numismatist in our midst. Yes a silver Maria Theresa Thaler. (I only know this because I googled it!)

My silver Thaler did not look the part 'on film' so I had it 24k goldplated for £20.

(I tried one or two other types of gold coin but I have eaten them).

Your remark about bullion worth, in the real world, might even come true. But, what goes up ......!

    Greetings Bob,
Just took a romp through your videos and greatly enjoyed them. I shoot with the V1U and am wondering what you use on your V1E for the close-up shots...
Do you use an adapter and prime lenses?
    Cheers,
    Matteus
  • bob lorrimer plus 2 years ago
The HVR V1E is almost identical to your cam, I think.

The twenty times optical zoom is great for head and shoulder while standing away from the subject but for the really BIG close ups I used in SILVER GUILT I use a magnification filter. (Sometimes called close-up filters)

Generally, they come in sets of 3 in dioptres +1 +2 +4.
They cost very little £39 in UK for three to suit our camera and of course they are no bigger than a normal UV filter. They can also be combined together.

They will be great on your fishing trip for additional material in huge close up .. it just looks so good!

Very beautifully filmed and a very effective, creative concept.
  • bob lorrimer plus 2 years ago
Thank-you Bill, I'll go with that.

I don't take things too seriously and I wanted to make a film that was comi-trajic.

However I had not realised how well the BAY photographed until after I returned home. I had never seen it before that morning!
  • Bill Walsh plus 2 years ago
I understand. Your joy for filmmaking definitely shows through your work. It is refreshing to watch.

It's great to see how effective you can be with just yourself and a camera. Can't always count on finding actors yet this is a better performance than you would have gotten out of someone else.

Dear Bob, my respect, my congratulations, and my thanks for a wonderful moment I enjoyed and for sharing my belief that – in spite of the day in age – one can still put great technical means at the service of a great story, instead of the other way around as it is too frequently the case! I'm really impressed. You deserve a prize (audience awards are the most delicious). Enter anywhere? All the best.
  • bob lorrimer plus 2 years ago
Thank-you Michael and I respect your comment. For me Imagery is at its best when it is in the service of a story or purpose.

At the very core of humanity, from the beginning of time, there is an underlying asset which sets us apart from the beasts of the field and it begins....

    "Once upon a time ... "

  • mel weidner 2 years ago
Bob, I very much enjoyed your piece. I'm curious as to how much "visual detail" you planned before arriving on site. Did you have a storyboard beforehand mapping out the specific shots? Or did you wing it and do most of the creation in editing? Thanks very much.
  • bob lorrimer plus 2 years ago
Thank-you Mel, I was mentally well prepared in terms of storyboard and I had googled the 'beach' which was within a mile of the airport. So I new from some excellent photography by others that it could look good.

I had my coin prop. And a new Canon 7d. The Canon is not ideal for self photography! But I focus up, lock off the exposure, check out the image and make a couple of takes and move to another angle. I tend to work in a chronological way. My failure to storyboard (pure laziness) led me to miss shots. So I returned the following morning to the same spot and shot a pile of cutaways.

I was very lucky with the weather .. the sun came out for exactly the crucial shot of me standing at the surf. I was able to waggle my coin about in my hand until the reflection bounced off my knackered features!

Amazing, and totally inspiring! Thank you for taking the time to make this comedic piece. The location you found really adds to the story. Nice job doing this on your own too.

It looks pretty remote, but I can imagine what some people passing by would have thought at the site of an old man running back and forth in front of a camera. :)
  • bob lorrimer plus 2 years ago
Yes Dale, there is nothing quite like an old tosser running up and down a beach with a camera fifty yards away to give the locals a laugh!

Bob, this is absolutely brilliant! Made a fairly rough day so much better! For being self-shot you did an amazingly good job. You have a great narration voice as well! I must ask though, how was the banana used in the production of this? Hehe =)
  • bob lorrimer plus 2 years ago
    The banana proved unexpectedly useful:

    1. Low angle lens support.

    2. Duck lure.

    3. Sandy sustenance.
