As readers of my blogpost on modding a Macbook Pro to be way cooler than any other shiny specimen out there might have realized, not all photos were taken with the same camera.I was intending to document the whole process with my formerly beloved Canon PowerShot SD800 IS (aka IXUS 850 IS in Europe) when it suddenly died on me. The lens won't retract anymore and the camera makes whiny noises when turned on. Canon's customer service seems to be particularly @#$!@% about this type of malfunction.Instead of using the nifty piece of photographic hardware with a wide-angle lens, I had to resort to the @#$!& cell phone cameras of my iPhone and SonyEricsson W810i.Even worse, I am stuck without a decent compact digital camera now. Do you have any recommendations? Feel free to either leave a comment or send me an email.Btw, sorry about the terrible quality of the video, I have recorded it with the W810i with video settings on high quality, LOL.Update, March 6th: I looked up Canon's German support hotline and gave them a call. After being greeted by a recorded message, you are asked to navigate around by pressing a number on the keypad. Pressing the key for reporting defects, yields the following message Es tut uns Leid, aber dieser Service ist momentan nicht verfuegbar. Bitte versuchen Sie es spaeter noch einmal. which translates to We are sorry, but this service is not available at the moment. Please try again later.I have tried this five times now, between 2pm and 2:30pm, where the hotline hours are listed as from 8am to 5:30pm. Let's see how this whole thing turns out. I was really considering to buy a DSLR from them, the EOS 450D/Digital Rebel XSi. Way to go Canon.Update, March 7th: After unsuccessfully trying to reach the repair department via the phone hotline menu, I resorted to navigating around until I was connected with a customer support rep, who was not necessarily friendly but at least did not try to explain to me that he was not working in the right department to help me out. He gave me the Canon mail address where I was supposed to send the camera to along with the receipt. Right, the receipt. Well, I don't have it anymore, but the camera has been out for less than two years and two years is the mandatory warranty span in Germany. I called amazon.de, that is, I had to enter my phone number on their website for them to call me back, but that they did almost instantaneously. The amazon support representative told me that he could re-send me a receipt (great!) or I could just send the camera back to them and they'd handle the rest with Canon (sounds even better). I think I'll go with the latter option.
