This is slightly EPIC, be advised.
Finished on 11/11 in anticipation of 01/10/10.

Backstory: This was created for Emily Wilson, who is the sister of Sarah Wilson, a girl I met and became good friends with at the Cannes Film Festival in France. Sarah thought it would be a good idea to set me and her sister up despite the obvious distance in between California (where I live) and Florida (where they live). So I made a video for her sister and got one back, and thus we started talking in June 09, and I am going out to Florida in January 2010... Thus, a good reason to make such a video!

Directed and Edited by - Colin Cabalka
Starring Colin Cabalka, John Travolta, Lucy Chacon, and various other background extras off the street.

Camera - Justin Barlup and Laura Vailancourt

Shot with all natural light.
Graded in Magic Bullet.

Shot on:
Canon 7D
Canon 5D Mark II

Lenses Used:
Zeiss Ultra Speed Prime 50 T/1.1
Canon 50 f/1.4
Canon 18-35 f/2.8
Canon 70-200 f/4 L

Nice job! Were you able to use your rigs or did you go 'palm-held?'
  • Colin Cabalka 15 days ago
We just did handheld on both cameras, had a CineSaddle but they were able to get most of the footage on the fly.

dude i am lovin this !
you sync really well ! .. i made a pop video for my artist down the street from where you made this ... he was really scared to sing in the street as people walked by lol .. also we were scared the police were gonna pull us for filming with a hv20 on a tripod without a permit !! ha ha ..fucking hollywood !! lol
none of that shit back home in UK !
im getting a 5dm2 soon .. can you recommend what lenses to get .. im thinking of getting the kit with 24-104mm .. and i need to buy another lens too ..

what lenses are essential and in what order to buy :-)

    ant
    uk
  • Colin Cabalka 14 days ago
    haha thanks anthony..
i tried just a little bit.
hollywood can be crazy about permits and such.
definitely... it helps shooting on something smaller for sure.

for lenses, i would grab a 70-200 f/4 L, its a great lens, super useful. and then get a sweet wide angle.

  • Anthony Johnson 14 days ago
thnx for the advice ... name a really good wide lens and mid range price wide pls :-)

check out my music video in hollywood lol

    vimeo.com/6781385

its only shot on a hv20 .. time to move up :-)

This is great Colin. Very cool shots, did you know there was going to be a premier that night with Travolta or did that just add to the magic of this video?

P.S. Thanks for checking TKF out! ;)
  • Colin Cabalka 13 days ago
    Hey Dustin!
Thanks alot, it turned out great, and I had some good help achieving my vision.
Did not know about Travolta, but when I did I hopped like the Energizer Bunny into the right place and rolled the take, and it turned out so perfect!
    TKF?
  • Dustin 12 days ago
TKF = TheKnifeFight.com You signed up last week I think because I posted your video on the site.

Hey Colin, I just had a friend post this link on my facebook page and randdomly asked me if my sisters name is Sarah. This is hen I found your video.
The funny part is.... My name is Emily Wilson, my sister's name is Sarah Wilson and we live in Florida. We also visited France, but a diferent times. Initally I thought that this was some kind of joke. lol
  • Colin Cabalka 12 days ago
hey I'm sorry for the mix up I thought It was a joke too!
what a coincedence! sorry to get your hopes up if you thought it was for you. hopefully some guy, maybe even a colin, will make you such a video :)

  • Anthony Johnson 12 days ago
hey colin , so is it you performing and your friends filming ?
also you seem to know about lenses , if i get the kit 24-104mm lens and a canon 70-200mm lens , will they both be really useful ?

also for video what is the difference in quality if i buy either a canon :

    70-200mm 4L
    or
    70-200mm 2.8L
    0r
    70-200mm 4L IS
    or
    70-200mm 2.8L IS

looking forward to your answers :-)

im a bit confused with lenses
  • mayer chalom 12 days ago
is is optical stabilization which is helpful for shooting sports. The IS lenses are more expensive than the then non is for the obvious reason. the 2.8 is much better in low light (larger aperture) thus much more expensive in low light. These are telephotos and should only be used in sports photography. These are expensive lenses mind you. So prepare yourself.
  • Anthony Johnson 12 days ago
lol i already checked out the prices (which in the uk are nearly double usa prices)

    so no shock there lol

you say they should only be used in sports photography, but colin here used it in his video and recommends it ..

i just wanna know if the IS will be used when i video ..thats 90% of what ill use the 5d for
