Capt'n Jim couldn't have picked a better weekend when he invited me along to dive the south end of San Clemente. We dove from Fish Hook to Pyramid Cove to the backside. Flat calm seas, very little wind, great vis . We overnighted in Pyramid Cove and were treated to the spectacular Milky Way (the real one, not the candy bar) glowing brightly. Not much macro, but lots of beautiful wide angle vistas. Lots and lots fish. It was what I remember diving was like 30 (okay 40) years ago. It was the opening weekend of lobster season. This was not the intent of our trip. Back in the day San Clemente Island was known as the Land Of The Shorts. It still is. We saw hundreds of lobster, none of them legal size. Where do the go from here? Or are they midgets? As with most great adventures, it's not the destination, it's the journey. The waters between Dana Point and SCL showed us bottle nosed and common dolphins, kelp paddies, a very large jumping mola mola (sorry no video) and flocks of sea birds.
