The monks from the Cistercian order are sometimes called the first Europeans. They forged a path for a common European culture, bringing science, art, religion and new working practices out to a wider Europe. The order originated in the French cloister Citeaux in Burgandy, and the Cisterians spread over all of Europe very quickly from the beginning of the 1100s. Within a few years, the number of European cloisters was around 350. By the middle of the 1400s, the number was up to 700. All originally derived from the same cloister in France.
