"The War Within: Healing the Wounds" will document the lives of veterans and active duty soldiers of the Iraq and Afghanistan war whose lives have been profoundly transformed by their direct experience from deployment, and after suffering war-related wounds like Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Brain Traumatic Injury (BTI) and Military Sexual Trauma (MST). Military service members have come together with Iraqi civilian communities to fight for veterans’ right to heal from trauma and for an end to the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Military suicide is at an all time high surpassing combat deaths in 2012. An estimated 50% of returning veterans suffer from PTSD or TBI and 60% of women have experience sexual assault.
The film follows the lives of several veterans and an Iraqi civilian. Their stories takes place amidst a prolonged war Afghanistan, the highest rates of suicide, and a groundbreaking Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) case where Iraqis and U.S. veterans are coming together to demand U.S. accountability, an end to war and the right to heal from war related traumas.
