It started off as a half-joke that popped in to my head while I was in the free book shop in Basildon. What are we going to do with all these books no one wants? Maybe people will be so poor soon we'll have to start burning them to keep warm. I wanted to explore the concept of book burning not out of hatred towards any race or culture, but out of necessity - and in this way challenge what people are shocked by: the destruction of books, or the abandonment of people?The soundtrack and captions were created by cutting up sections of the books I used in the film: Atonement and Captain Corelli's Mandolin, and then mixing them up and translating them badly in and out of languages until I got the bizarre sentences you hear/see. I used books that I hate.
