For the 2013 Scarlet Day of Service, Rutgers University students traveled to Union Beach, NJ to help clean debris from a lot where a house once stood. The homeowner, who lived in that house for 30 years, could not afford to hire anyone to remove the rubble. The students who volunteered were comprised of first years through seniors of all majors, many of whom have strong ties to the shore. Rutgers Scarlet Day of Service is an annual community service event, and the largest day of student-run service projects across New Brunswick, Piscataway, and the surrounding community.
