Film by MAGDALENA KUBALA & ANNA JAKLEWICZ explores the lives of transgenders living in Yogyakarta, an Indonesian city on the island of Java.
They are known as ‘WARIAS’, the term being a combination of the two words: ‘WANITA’ (woman); and ‘PRIA’ (man) – together defining their identity as a combination of two genders.
So who exactly are they? A Waria would describe themself as either a female born with a male body, a woman trapped in a man’s physicality or more often ‘a man with the soul of a woman’. Some Indonesians prefer the term ‘third gender’, as Warias can be classified NEITHER as men NOR as women.
