Gölyazı, Bursa-İzmir karayolunda Uluabat gölü (Apollont gölü) kıyısında küçük bir yarımadada kurulmuştur. Tarihi, Roma dönemine kadar gider. Roma döneminden kalanları, evlerin temel taşlarında görmek mümkündür. Tarihi ve coğrafi orijinal özellikler taşır. Apollon Krallığı'nın merkezi olarak bilinir. Köyün başlıca geçim kaynağı günümüzde balıkçılık ve zeytinciliktir. Ayrıca her sene düzenlenen Leylek Şenliği vardır.
