I like the fact that you are checking body mechanics and such but I would suggest you find a local martial arts school to get some students of spear or some form of pole arms. A kung fu school would probably be your best bet since most of the competent spear specialists out there are from Chinese schools. There is a lot more to fight mechanics than square on blocking and it is much more dynamic when you see someone that has been trained for years doing the real thing. In fact if you intend to do any motion capture I would say that its a near requirement.

However if you are looking for something that is more along the lines of simple inspiration I would recommend looking on You tube for some videos of "Jogo Do Pau which is a Portuguese stick fighting system that is fantastic to watch, I keep praying there will be a teacher that moves to Los Angeles where I can learn! Just a couple thoughts.

I've been a martial artist for over two decades and I know what the difference between a real fight and a staged one can look like. A good sparring session between two competent martial artists can be just what you are looking for.
