Theo Jansen & the Strandbeests

Dutch kinetic sculptor Theo Jansen has fashioned his own piece of nature from plastic tubes and bottles since 1990. He gave them the name strandbeests.

Jansen has created a breathing, moving - and once they can detect water (through a pneumatic system he is currently developing), "thinking" species. His dream is to relocate the strandbeests to the Holland coast where they can exist on their own.

There are several videos showing Jansen's work online, including a TVC for BMW South Africa. This video was taken during a visit to his wind laboratory in Ypenburg, The Hague in November 2009.
