Model, Texture, Simulation, Render, etc all done in Houdini.

A central deforming rigid body driving a surrounding cloth layer, with wires attached to it's surface that are the growing tentacles. Growing the tentacles and making sure they dont tangle up in the begining with a magnet force pushing them out, then a 2nd magnet force on the incomming green cell, which is a dynamic object with inital velcotiy set to make it move in against the main cell.
