In the late 16th century, the vast overseas Portuguese empire began to falter as Portugal's throne fell to Spanish control. Had the Portuguese not been able to take advantage of a revolt in Catalunya and engineer the Restoration of the Portuguese Crown and State, the Portuguese language might have been completely replaced at home by Spanish as the language of government and culture and would eventually have withered in former colonies with no organized community to support it.
