WHAT?
An investigation into young people’s attitudes to sectarianism in Northern Ireland and its impact carried out by young researchers.
WHO?
Young NCB (YNCB) is a free membership for under 18’s. Members have the opportunity to join projects where they influence what happens and get their voices heard on issues that matter to them.
HOW?
The young researchers choose focus groups as the best way of finding out what other young people thought. They created a set of questions and prompts to help the discussion in the focus groups and developed an information sheet to provide informed consent. A total of 11 focus groups were carried out with 70 young people aged between 15 – 18 years old. The results were discussed by the group with an adult researcher and common themes identified.
WHERE?
The young researchers then arranged their focus groups in their own areas, meeting with young people from across Belfast, Banbridge, Newtownards, Newtownabbey and Armagh.
WHEN?
The focus groups were conducted between September – November 2012.
WHY?
YNCB wanted to explore the young people’s attitudes to sectarianism and its impact on children and young people because they felt that the issue affects children and young people across the whole of Northern Ireland.
