  • First off I want to say one thing. Don't use age as an excuse for your work. Do you think LeBron James told the critics, "Well if I suck when I get to the NBA remember....I'm only 18." Or however old he was when he went to the NBA.

Be confident in your talents. You've got some really nice shots here but I think there are some things you need to include, like a nice montage with some tighter shots in the beginning of the reel. Basically what you want to do is give your viewer a taste of everything right of the bat....and then go into the single shots and break 'em down.

I don't know, maybe it's completely the opposite for a cinematography reel. I'm just going off of my own experience of what I've come across and read. Good luck!

No your right on with giving your viewer a taste of multiple shots for interest purposes. I find cinematography to be the emotion, atmosphere, and beauty of a shot. So this may be why i chose to do a slower intro. But for next time i will jump off into a more exciting intro. Thanks.

tell us more about how you did this work, equipment, software, hardware, by the way, very clever, age is not an excuse, just a fact, i know people who claim to be pro just because they can afford p2 and have no talent and ages in the business! keep it up! soon will see you doing more stuning work.
  • Ryan Matthew 4 months ago
that's funny you say that about p2 cards haha. I am affiliated with a few pro's and their ego is solidly based around their hvx200's.haha
well about my equipment. I use

    Equipment-

    -Canon HV20
    -35mm DOF adapter
    -Video Rode Mic
    -tripod (cheap)
    -DIY Dolly on PVC track
-two 500w. home depot work lights
(attached to drum set cymbal stands as light stands)
-a thick and thin window curtain for diffusers

    Software-
    -Adobe Premiere CS3
-Adobe After Effects CS3 (used only once in this demo)
    -Sony Vegas 8 pro

    Thanks Christian.Celada

you use external monitor now with your adapter? nice focus with the old telephone!
  • Ryan Matthew 4 months ago
no external monitor. Just using the flipped LCD screen.Thanks. I though that old phone was beautiful as well.
  • Maz1878 4 months ago
you flip the lcd or you use the flip hack? put more videos up please, you do great justice to twoneils adapter! :P

Great video man, question though...what type of lighting did you use? (home depot style or pro?)
  • Ryan Matthew 4 months ago
i use two 500 watt home depot work lights. I attach them onto drum set stands as lighting stands.haha less than $30

    if you watch at 00:00:58
you'll see a work light shining up onto a reflector on the wall in the background. Behind the chair.
  • phanatik 4 months ago
Yeah I went and got the Sears special... $30 Craftsman 1000W on tripod.

Lovely work Ryan, btw what 35mm adapter you using?
  • Ryan Matthew 4 months ago
I'm using Twoneils static 35mmpro. With a f/1.4 Nikon Lens. And thank you!:)
  • Kjewbee 4 months ago
I was thinking of getting the twoneil adapter myself. But being static and flipped, i think i'm gonna save some (read: 'a lot') more and buy a letus extreme. (vibrating)
But for budget friendly shooting, you rock!
Lots of diy stuff I see, home market lights, etc.. You are right! Why buy 1000's of $ on professional shit when you can be creative and diy. Well done!

Great stuff. I think your age is inspiring to know. Besides your knowledge is growing fast beyond your years.

    Keep inspiring us
  • Ryan Matthew 4 months ago
Thank you! I'm really put off by my age for a lot of people won't take me serious but your right, hopefully by the time i'm older i'll have a lot of experience on my hands. Thank you for watching. Really.thanks...:)

Great work homie! I like ur choice of shots. It will be an ease for you as u grow as we all are. I like your coloring balance as well. How u gettin "gain-less" footage? u shooting using HD24 or straight HD on HV20?

    Keep doing ur thing thing!
  • Ryan Matthew 4 months ago
    Thanks for the comment.
I film in HD24 pretty much but there are some some shots i film pure HD. And about gainless footage? i guess, it's lighting, aperture, and style.haha i'm just lucky i don't get crazy grainy footage huh? Thanks man.

Hey, that's pretty impressive considering your 16 for the moment... When I was 16, I was a bum... What a minute... I'm still a bum :) I really like the dolly shots, what are you using? DOF adapter? what setup/lens etc...?
  • Ryan Matthew 4 months ago
    haha thanks Lance!
I'm using a Canon HV20 with a 35mm adapter attached a Nikon Nikkor 50mm f/1.8D lens. DIY dolly. and Video Rode Mic.
You won't hear the mic in this demo except in the intro which was mixed recorded. I recorded those sounds after the whole demo was done.
This whole demo was mostly with the 35mm adapter but there are a few shots in there with a naked hv20. (ex. Baby and crib, time lapse, me in car):)

You definitely could have told me that the shot from
1:58 to 2:04 was film and I would have believed you.

So what kind of high school are you going to where at 16 you're doing demo reels and other things for classes?
  • Ryan Matthew 2 months ago
    haha wow! thanks!

and i don't go to high school. I graduated early and now i'm in college. So the demo reels for my cinematography class.
But while i was in high school, in my film class we did do (seperate) documentaries, PSA's, and a 24hr. film competition. as well as end of the semester final was a feature film. It was a good class. But i missed a lot of that from graduating early.

Wow boy, great work!! Just noticed some texture from the adapter's Ground Glass...

Nice shots with the DIY Dolly... I'm working in my own dolly too... And my own stabilizer and crane too...

Keep on learning and training, and in ten years, with my actual age, you will be an excellent cinematographer!!

Ps: I've started in the video production's world in 2000 with 17... But 8 years ago, there was no inexpensive DOF adapter, and no inexpensive HD cameras... So, enjoy all the technology you can put your hands on to improve more and more your work!!!

:( You took out the music from the 1st cut of the demo reel.

Personally enjoyed the first cut more. It had an upbeat/hopeful feeling cause of the music and the shots you chose, but to each his own. What's the name of that song by the way?
  • Ryan Matthew 21 days ago
On the old demo reel the band is called,

"Beirut" and the song is "Nantes"

glad you like my reel. I am really doing a lot of projects now so hopefully i can put together a way better one later this year. Please do let me know when you have yours! I would love to see it.

Man Ryan, I hate you. Ever since you told me the name of the song, it's been on repeat for like the last 2 hours! It won't get out of my brain.

RYAN MATTHEW.....YOU....ARE THE FUTURE!!! I mean that in the best way. If that is a sample of skills at 16, imagine at 26, 36, etc. Do what you love, and that appears to be film. Good for you. Keep up the good work, I'm going to check in on you from time to time to see how your developing.

    Cheers mate,

    eric.
