Chris Smith took this clip of the deep pool immediately below Italio Falls, 30 miles outside of Yakutat, Alaska. Even with a good set of polarizers, you have no idea just how much life is swimming around in these remote salmon streams. You have baby salmon fry everywhere, plus the adult sockeye, pink, chum and king salmon milling around waiting their turn before climbing the falls to their spawning grounds. Toward the end, he pans over to a whole bunch of dolly varden char, looking for their opportunity to feed on the salmon eggs that pop out as the salmon climb the falls and bash themselves against the rocks. The dollies are the fish with the white leading edges to their fins. This is my favorite place on earth.
